A Guy Called Gerald Live
Benimussa Park is an old abandoned Zoo located in the hills of Benimussa. Built in 1975 by a Spanish company from Mallorca it opened it’s doors to the Public for the first time as Fantasiland in 1978. The zoo housed animals such as seals, parrots, cows, sheep, monkeys, and rabbits and the original structure of Fantasiland remains unchanged to this day, including the infamous seal pit.
Fantasiland didn’t work out, running the zoo all year round proved unprofitable and in 1980 the zoo was closed. Five years later another company bought the venue and Gala Night was reopened as an outdoor event location, minus the animals. Every night tourists visited the park to enjoy live music, BBQ, Bucking Bronco and so on. Occasionally Gala Night would be hired out to independent companies such as Sundance, Paradise Lost or MTV Aquasonic Festival for live concerts and DJ performances. In 2002 this came to an end and the owners of Gala Night began to search for new promoters who would embrace the beauty of the abandoned zoo and allow it to shine.
During this time a small number of promoters threw parties at Gala Night, some were successful and some were not. In 2005 a proposal for an underground event called The Zoo Project caught the attention of the Gala Night owners. The Zoo Project was to be a conceptual gathering with its roots firmly in the underground electronic music scene and with an aspiring ethos for equality and unity among event-goers. Occuring weekly, The Zoo Project encourages participants to communicate and express themselves through music and dance. It's a place where you can lose yourself and find yourself all over again in an instant, set to an unforgettable soundtrack. In 2009 following the huge success of this gathering, Channel Zoo was born, the love child of The Zoo Project and underground music lovers everywhere. Taking place every Wednesday from the beginning of June right up until the end of August, Channel Zoo has hosted some of the most forward thinking artists within the electronic music sphere. A diverse range of some of the industries finest brands, record labels and artists.
