"hi-hats from heaven and bass lines from hell..."
With his superb technical ability and his well-earned respect in North America's underground dance culture, Adam Marshall is one of the prime ambassadors of the Canada's electronic music scene. His passion and devotion to the art of DJing lift him far above the competition, who continue to pigeon-hole music into easy to digest genres. From deep, late-night house jams to seriously jacking techno music, Adam has a skill for taking listeners into new sonic territory while not losing sight of his basic purpose: to make people dance.
Growing up in a hyper multi-cultural society like Toronto provided him with endless musical influences from a very young age. He began buying vinyl records when he was 16 at the legendary record store, Play De Record, where one would often hear the latest dance-hall tracks straight from Jamaica while waiting in line to sample the most cutting-edge selection of US house music this side of NYC. The store carried almost any kind of "dance" music as long as you could spend some time digging through the many dusty crates. It was with this cross-pollination that Adam developed his current sound which embraces elements of techno, deep house, jak-beat, jazz and dub.
As a witness to musical history, Adam discovered acid house and deep techno through the infamous rave scene of the US mid-west in the early 90's. From the dark brooding environments of Richie Hawtin's Jak parties in Detroit, to the bumpity-bump of Derrick Carter going off in warehouse on the South side of Chicago - house and techno music was alive.
Endeavoring to foster a like-minded environment in his hometown of Toronto, Adam brought together long-time friends - Jeff Milligan, Mike Shannon, and Jeremy P. Caulfield - to produce special events that showcased a new style of "techno" music. One which embraced soul, style and substance.
During this time Adam was a staple at many of the city's major nightspots - playing weekly to big crowds at underground raves and well-respected clubs such as Industry, System Soundbar, and his own club night "Blue" at Fat City (whose wide-open booking policy attracted guests such as Chez Damier, Theo Parrish, Marco Carola, Gene Farris, Slam & Ron Trent among others). It was shortly after this that foreign bookings began drawing Adam abroad. By 1999 he was making tracks across North America as well as in the production studio. In 2001 he launched Killer Recordings, releasing EP's from Jake Fairley, Matt Thibadeau, and himself to underground acclaim.
Electing to morph the label into New Kanada in 2004, Adam sought out new productions from some of Canada's brightest stars. Focusing on his minimal roots while keeping a keen fixation on the dancefloor, New Kanada has released a wave of classic tracks and remixes by the likes of Mike Shannon, Jeremy P. Caulfield, Jeff Milligan, Hearthrob, J. Hunsberger, Brennan Green, Basic Soul Unit and Adam himself. It's this ear for excellence, combined with a eye to the future, that places Adam ahead of his contemporaries.
With the growing success of New Kanada, and releases on some of the techno's most promising labels (Cynosure, Thema), Adam has been continually fine-tuning his "live" set since his premier main-stage performance at the 2006 Detroit Electronic Music festival. Vibrant, deep and pumping are common descriptions of the sound of Adam's live show with equal parts tension, drive and flow.
As of January 2008, Adam will be relocating to Berlin to work and live.
