Antranig

His laid back, unassuming disposition belies the torrent of talent that distinguishes producer, musician, DJ, Antranig in his field. Touted by dance music mainstays such as Danny Tenaglia and Erick Morillo as possibly one of the most important new talents to emerge in a fiercely competitive arena, Antranig's recent releases on the Sondos label and high profile DJ work have helped propel him to the cusp of global recognition. Born of Armenian, Sicilian and Honduran ancestry in Union City, New Jersey, the piano was Antranig's first musical influence. Self taught as a boy he graduated to a simple Casio keyboard at the age of eleven, going on to score the entirety of a school play with the simplistic synth and drum machine. By the time he left high school he had started making his own original music with a growing collection of drum machines and synthesizers while gaining a local reputation as a talented DJ. "After school I decided to cut back on the DJing and focus on making music" says Antranig. "I had such a broad range of influences from the British pop acts of the time like Depeche Mode and New Order as well as classic rock acts like Pink Floyd and the Doors".

Attending New York's prestigious School Of Audio Research gave Antranig an invaluable grounding in the day to day working of a recording studio, but it was the lure of the turntables and nightlife that served as his entree into dance music's big league. "I'd hang out in New York City clubs like Twilo, Roxy and The Tunnel, and was really influenced by the music that I heard being played by people like Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone". Antranig's first big break as a DJ came in '98 when he landed a Wednesday night residency at the famed Limelight nightclub in Manhattan. It was during his weekly trips to the specialist record stores to hunt out future dance floor gems that he was first turned on to the alternative, minimalist sounding imports that seemingly went against the grain of the tribal mainstream. Seeing Danny Tenaglia spin those same tunes at the club Vinyl was a pivotal moment for Antranig. He realized that there was a market for the kind of music he loved to make himself. Inspired by the event he proceeded to make a demo, which he presented to Tenaglia. Duly impressed by the fledgling producer's talent and determination Tenaglia took him under his wing, firstly allowing him to open for him at Vinyl and then as co-remixer on the club hits "The Door" by Circuit Boy Featuring Alan T (SPF Records) and "Lady" by Modjo (MCA). Now a noted figure by those in the know in the club scene, Antranig met up with Subliminal/Sondos head/DJ/Producer Erick Morillo who wasted no time in signing him to the Sondos label which specializes in a darker more minimalist sound than Subliminal Records. Under the auspices of Morillo, Antranig has gone on to produce a slew of underground club hits, quietly garnering a groundswell of support for himself and his unique sound that seems destined to explode in the upcoming months. Releases thus far include "Do It To Me"(EP) and "Dance To The Groove" (both with occasional collaborator Pons), "Submission" and "Shined On Me" (remix). Antranig recently remixed Who Da Funk's "Sting Me Red" (Cream/EMI), one of the top ten tunes at this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami. Despite being known in the dance music circles for his stylistic approach to music making, Antranig reveals that typecasting could be a critic's biggest mistake.
