When we left off somewhere in 2005, Caspian had just joined the infamous yet currently defunct Blue Bookings joining techno heavy hitters: Marco Carola, Sven Vath, Chris Leibing, Speedy J, Steve Bug, Adam Beyer and Cari Lekebusch. With gigs in Detroit, NYC and Miami and the odd European appearance he was proving to be a solid asset to any line-up. Polaris had been running for five years on a very limited release basis with support from a diverse range of DJs such as Cari Lekebusch, Derek May, Derek Saunderson, Tiga. John Acquaviva included Caspian's Humidity EP in his compilation for Clubstar in 2005. With only some loops on Conversation Records and a track on the seminal Great Lakes Sound Compilation for Secret Weapon/Third Ear it had been awfully quiet for Caspian.
Jumping ten years earlier we would have found Caspian aka villa_straylight enjoying his first residency at infamous out door club, La Grotta in Malta supplying the masses with a blend of acid techno and trance. He moved to Toronto in late '97 and started the city's first hard techno night @ Area 51 where Polaris was conceived with fellow resident DJ Glitch. Together as Tweak they also enjoyed a couple of years as a Live PA playing alongside Chris Leibing, Billy Nasty, Christian Smith, Punisher and formed the main sound behind the label. By 2004 Caspian was back to going solo and worked hard to try and increase his profile. This proved to be hard when you lead a double life as and interactive creative director during the day and aspiring muso by night. And for the last couple of years the big budgets and team inspiration has won the fight.
Last year we asked whether the duality of Caspian’s life would have any impact on his capabilities as a musician and label head.
The fact is, 2008 was one of his most prolific years in his career. His music garnered much attention across the globe from DJs and critics alike; with his debut for Thoughtless Music “Crashed” receiving a exceptional review by DE:bug (who rarely comment on digital releases.) It seems his experience is starting to shine through. We saw the relauch of Polaris Records on Beatport with a barrage of Caspian’s most recent studio work, as well as fellow Toronto label Secret Weapon Records snapping up a couple of tracks for their much respected discography.
And what to expect for this year?
Another Thoughtless track is in the bag and a miniLP destined for Polaris called LoopKulture.
With his profile growing from release to release we hope for great things in 2009.
