With productions signed to both German (Moodmusic) and UK (Four:Twenty) labels, a life immersed in underground music, a job in the dance music industry and a real party ethic, Craig Torrance is gradually developing into one of the underground London scene’s freshest talents.
The flame-haired Scot, originally from Glasgow but now based in London, first caught the techno bug by regularly attending all-night raves back in the early nineties. Following rave’s demise he found himself hypnotized by Glasgow’s techno scene with DJs like Hawtin, Vath, May and local boys SLAM appearing regularly.
His passion for the sound and scene grew further when he moved to London to study journalism and straight after graduating he found himself working full-time as a music journalist and building contacts and outlets to receive cutting edge music from.
Then early last year he found himself experimenting in the studio with his colleague Gavin Herlihy and after a few heavy sessions, their track ‘So That’s What Happens’ was complete and immediately snapped up by Sasse Lindblad for his Berlin-based forward-thinking techno imprint Moodmusic. The track, an amalgamation of all that’s good about house, techno and electro, was soon getting plays by Ewan Pearson, Tiefschwarz, Kiki, Anja Schneider, Mr. C and James Lavelle.
With the success of the track came DJ gig requests and Craig soon found himself implementing his knowledge of deep, melodic house and techno into his DJ sets with a number of gigs around the the UK. After sending a demo mix to Mulletover’s Geddes, he was immediately booked to play Mulletover, probably London’s coolest underground party. And went on to rock the place.
Still busy in the studio and working with studio partner and flatmate Philip Hochstrate, 2007 has got off to a great start with another track. ‘Two Face’, signed to Moodmusic, and it will appear on their forthcoming anniversary mix CD. A full EP will follow in summer 2007. Better still, their next production ‘Shrinkage’ was immediately snapped up by Bristol’s Four:Twenty, also home to the likes of Martin Buttrich and Loco Dice. With both tracks due summer 2007 and ‘Shrinkage’ already getting props from Dinky, Audiofly and Sebo K and a request for the track from Loco Dice, Craig’s profile is looking like growing further.
With more productions in the pipeline and remix requests already in and using his musical passion and knowledge to blur the lines between melodic house and deep techno meaning his DJ sets evolve with every performance, the best from Craig Torrance is definitely yet to come…
