Born in Vittel (France) in the sixties, Erik Rug is one of France's House pioneers with his participation to the French underground dating back to the late eighties and his Locomotive residency alongside Laurent Garnier. A natural Dj, Rug learnt the tricks of the trade in his uncle's club where he started Djing at age twelve. Since then, he has always felt at home in a club and his move towards house music-production can be interpreted as a mere prolongation of his clubbing experience.
His production works began with 1991's "Black Planet Ep" followed by several releases on Toronto Underground. Rug, actually became one of the first few European producers to release tracks on an American imprint. Back in France, Rug inaugurated his radio-host career with his "Waxgroove show" on Fréquence Gay and was soon picked up by über-hip Parisian competitor Radio Nova to host his house-essential show on Nova's critical Saturday evening slot.
Throughout the late nineties, Rug also maintained a very busy Djing agenda that had him traveling allover Europe, often getting better response from overseas crowd (Germany, Uk or Switzerland). Through his releases as Dirty Jesus (Paperecordings) or Daphreephunkateerz (on Artefact) and his compilation work for the French Fried Funk series (Rough Trade), Erik Rug helped promoting the French underground and yet maintained a distant stance towards "French Touch" hype. 2000-2001 should see the release of some new Dirty Jesus and Daphreephunkateerz material on Paperecordings ' spin-off repap records.
