One DJ’s name is synonymous with Ibiza and that is SPACE resident JONATHAN ULYSSES.
Voted "Best Club in the World” at 2001 Dance Star Awards, it's understandable that Jonathan describes his six years residency as "living the dream". Playing alongside luminaries, including Eric Morillo, Sasha, David Guetta, Darren Emerson, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox and Arman Van Helden and many more. Jonathan has also mixed three terrace selection sides of the SPACE CD series and DJ’s globally as main resident on the SPACE World Tour.
However, Jonathan's career was no overnight sensation. After leaving school, Jonathan formed a sound system called Soul Plus and fancying himself as a bit of a ragga MC competed in sound clashes across South London. In 1989, he started working for a holiday company in Corfu where his stage presence and crowd control training served him in good stead as a DJ. Once the season was over, Jonathan returned to London and spent time DJ’ing around NW8 until the next summer, when he was sent to the Balearic Island of Ibiza. In Ibiza, he found himself being pushed to DJ at certain times and events, this is where Jonathan realised his true vocation……………..
Taking a small record box of R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Jungle and very little house, Jonathan returned to Ibiza the next summer solely to DJ.
He went to work for a friend who had taken over a small venue and for the next six years this was to be Jonathan’s training ground where he perfected his mixing skills and got to grips with the industry. Jonathan’s presence there, complete with his MC’ing antics, dancing on the bar and varied musical selection transformed the venue into one of the best places to be, where he played the coolest music to packed crowds every single night.
This resulted in Jonathan playing stints at the islands major clubs: Clockwork Orange, Es Paradis, Miss Moneypennys, El Divino, Amnesia, Privilege and, of course, SPACE. The bars were no stranger to him either, as he clocked up Bar M, Mambo, Kanya, Star Cafe, Savannah and Orange Corner.
In 1998, Jonathan started a residency for Twice as Nice who were at the time small promoters from London, the rest they say is history...
Although Jonathan built up a stellar reputation as a house DJ, he still does not like to pigeon hole the music he plays and keeps his record box suitably eclectic. He describes the majority of his house style as percussive with a funky twist - very pumping and uplifting. Throughout his fifteen year career, Jonathan has played every genre of dance music. His aim is to educate the crowd rather than play only the obvious commercial tracks, this has helped him break boundaries and receive the acclaim he deserves. In recognition of this, summer 2003 saw Jonathan being nominated by DJ magazine for Best Ibiza D.J.
Never having stayed in one place long enough to secure a regular radio show, Jonathan has made appearances on various radio shows, such as Galaxy (Manchester and Bristol), Kiss 100, Ministry of Sound, Key 103, Thump Radio (San Francisco) and Radio 1, Pete Tong Essential Mix. He also has an ever-growing production CV (see discography attached). Past productions have seen Jonathan work with various producers, such as Tom Neville, Good Rhyming Bass on Nukleuz and French producer Laurent C of Paris, 21st Century Party People on Cyber Records. Most recently working with producer Matt Swartz from Deepest Blue finishing the track "The Voice" under the name Nine Lives, signed to Azuli. The Voice featured on the SPACE compilation 2003.
Five years on and Jonathan has made his mark firmly establishing himself at SPACE, which has not only won “Best Dance Club” in 2001, but "We love Sundays"@SPACE, won “Best Club Night” of which Jonathan is the premier resident.
Summer 2004 saw Jonathan’s DJ’ing in further demand, when he was filmed live, touring with MTV in Ibiza, Germany, Switzerland and Austria for the Gate to Ibiza Tour, in combination with the mix CD “Gate to Ibiza”, mixed with DJ Henry. This, along with numerous interviews and press releases in Club Knowledge, DJ Magazine and Mixmag, have ensured Jonathan’s reputation has remained at the highest level.
Adding to what has already become a very successful year for Jonathan, he also mixed and compiled another successfully acclaimed CD “In Bed with Space”, which was released worldwide through ClubStar.
Playing for such diverse crowds at SPACE has opened doors for Jonathan, who has had his talents recognised globally. In recent years he has played at the top nights in Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Canada, Paris, Columbia, Israel, Hungary, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Holland, German Dance Festival, POP KOM Koln 2003, Croatia Dance Music Festival 2003 and even Singapore.
Jonathan adds to an already impressive line up, UK nights which include Garlands in Liverpool, Pacha in London, Miss Moneypennys in Birmingham, Pam’s Festival in Norwich, Kiss da Funk in Leeds, the BIG IBIZA REUNION Skegness, DeJaVu in Hull, Passion in Colville, and, of course “We Love”.
Jonathan will continue his residency at SPACE next summer 2005 and, in addition to spending winter 2004 playing for the now firmly established and very successful SPACE Winter World Tour, he will embark on a once-a-month residency at the all new SPACE in Barcelona.
