Kid Blue

My name's Kid Blue (Rory to my mum) and I'm a DJ/producer/club promoter based in London, originally from Birmingham, via Leeds. I like going out, reading books, watching films, all night raving, 10 pin bowling, conversation, having fun and trying not to get old! I grew up listening to 80s pop, Seattle grunge, Britpop, Detroit techno, ambient dub, handbag house, Warp records and LTJ Bukem all at the same time and started making music on a computer at school when I was 14.

At some point around the time I got to Uni my housemate played me a Nu-Skool Breaks compilation, and I liked the mish-mash of styles. It was like the bastard love child of electro, techno, dnb and hip hop and producers such as Meat Katie, Lee Coombs, Terminalhead and BT really flicked my switch. I started a club night in Leeds called Technique which went on to be pretty huge and gave me the chance to meet everyone on the breaks scene, as well as other heroes like Derrick May, Richie Hawtin, Luke Vibert and Matthew Herbert. I met Miss Kittin once, but I didn't like her, she was rude.

So when I came down to London in 2006 I had fairly good contacts, and met up with Paul Arnold who very kindly gave me a job with Fat! Records, running their DJ agency, helping to promote the Chew The Fat! club nights and being resident DJ. I also released some records through Lot49 & Fat! that did well and meant I got the chance to start DJing abroad which has been pretty damn cool. I count myself pretty lucky that I'm getting to do more than I could have imagined when I got my first set of decks.

Musically at the moment I'm not feeling the breaks so much, by and large it's become pretty formulaic, but there are still good producers out there and if I hear a good record I'll always play it. I've always loved house and techno and there's some great stuff around at the moment, but I'm interested in music that blurs boundaries so my sets are a bit of a mish-mash. Production-wise I'm really feeling old-school acid house sounds at the moment, I'm not sure why, it's probably just a phase!

As you can see I'm out and about a fair bit playing records (well, CDs mostly nowadays), and I still go up to play at Technique fairly regularly, so if you're in the vicinity make sure you pop in and say hi.
