Young Michael Anguelov used to sit in his Quebec City grade-school band class dreaming of being free from the restrictive theory and steadfast rules of traditional band music. He pictured himself a rock superstar, banging his guitar into tiny pieces after stringing a screaming rif. But his rock star dreams were overshadowed the day he discovered the hypnotic draw of dance music.
Already an accomplished guitarist and drummer, the move to mixing was a smooth transition. At the fresh age of 20, he invested in turntables and a mixer, and found a venue to display his talents, managing an after-hours club in Quebec City. But events took a turn for the worse, and the club was forced to shut down.
Dissuaded but not disheartened, Mikas looked to his next chapter. Music production was a natural step. Mikas picked up his DJ gear and headed for Canada’s dance music capital: Montreal
Mikas has, ever since, built his label’s music on the premise of being different. He wanted it to be as danceable as it is listenable. This is what he achieved, so successfully in fact, that his music has gained notoriety in Europe, where it has been played on stage by some of the biggest names in the business: Tiesto, Van Buuren and Van Dyke.
Last year, his single “Breathing You In” shot to number one on the charts of Europe’s biggest dance music website, Juno.co.uk.
The Progressive Grooves label now includes a catalogue of over 60 releases.
Mikas is now working on the follow-up to his Emotional EP Vol I, which debuted at number three on Sony’s US Connect Charts. The much-anticipated Volume II is set to be released this summer.
