MUNK is the project of MATHIAS MODICA. One of the two bosses and masterminds of Germany's GOMMA label. Munk initially was done by Modica and his Gomma partner JONAS IMBERY. Imbery left the project and started his new TELONIUS project, but he still co-produces the MUNK albums. MUNK now is Modica and his guest musicians who will perform live starting autumn 2008.
The MUNK debut album APERITIVO was released in 2004 to critical acclaim. The guys toured the whole world as a DJ team and the press was euphoric. UK's The NME described the Munk album as "effortlessly cool… like a German DFA", and other mags around the world lauded the album. The main single was KICK OUT THE CHAIRS!, an indie disco anthem with long time Gomma fan James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem on vocals. Other guests on APERITIVO included BOBBY CONN, the then unknown DJ CHLOE from Paris and MIDNIGHT MIKE aka MICKEY MOONLIGHT.
After the release MUNK had been touring 2 years around the world, playing clubs from Rio to Tokyo, Stockholm to Sydney. The guys played art events at Gugggenheim Museum as well as at Colette fashion parties in Paris and music festivals like Sonar or V festival in Australia.
Besides his own projects Mathias Modica is running the Gomma label with his partner and releases albums by HEADMAN, WHOMADEWHO, TOMBOY, MOCKY, THE RAMMELLZEE and BOX CODAX, the solo project of Nick MacCarthy of Franz Ferdinand.
MUNK also did three compilations: ANTI NY and TEUTONIK DISASTER part 1 & 2. Both CDs are filled up with rare NO wave and psychodisco from the late 70ies and early 80ies. They also released an album under the name of LEROY HANGHOFER ("White Trash" 2002) and did a few remixes.
In June 2008 the new MUNK album will be released. It includes co-operations with Italian actress ASIA ARGENTO, known from Sofia Coppolas movie "Marie Antoniette". She performs the vocals on "LIVE FAST DIE OLD", the first new Munk single. ED BANGER record boss BUSY P loves it and even wanted to do an own version of the song. (release July 2008). More remixes by THE JUAN MACLEAN (DFA), WHOMADEWHO, HEADMAN and others are getting good feedback from DJs all over the place right now. (Germanys biggest music magazine GROOVE made the album "Album of the Month" in June 2008.)
