Go BackThe Freaks
From: UK
The Freaks
Freaks Justin Harris (former runway attendant) and Luke Solomon (former deep house fishmonger) formed an Illicit partnership as Freaks in a shed in North London four years ago, since then they have released a plethora of singles on several different labels, such as Pagan, 20:20 Vision, Phono, Guidance, Classic Recordings, Large and Estereo.

Luke and Justin have also had great success and gained huge respect in the remix field, as Freaks, remixing everybody from Pulp through Alison Limerick to Soft Cell. Along with DJ partner and Lord of Darkness, Kenny Hawkes, Luke runs London deep house stalwart mid week club Space and regular plays all over the globe.

It was only a matter of time until the Freaks were being courted by the majors, however, disillusioned with what they had to offer, Luke and Justin decided to set up their own label 'Music For Freaks'. Luke already co-ran Classic Recordings with legendary Chicago DJ and producer Derrick Carter. In early 1999 'Music For Freaks' was born and Freaks found a home for their unorthodox House. The first four Freaks releases met with excellent response by press, DJ's and radio alike. The limited Music For Freaks series witnessed a Freaks record that took them 'from the floors of Fridays R Firin' to The Ministry' (Terry Farley), 'Turning Orange' sees them team up with Joey Negro to create a monster of a Deep House anthem, gaining fantastic reviews and succeeding in bringing Freaks to a wider audience than their ever faithful 'DeepHouse 150'. Freaks have recently remixed Akasha for Wall Of Sound, Isolee for Playhouse and Mateo & Matos for Glasgow Underground.

Freaks eagerly awaited debut album 'The Beat Diaries' was released in April this year and hailed as innovative 'off-the-wall beats and twisted grooves' (DJ) and a welcome diversion from the plethora of unadventurous releases flooding the market. Although planning a hectic tour of Europe to promote the album, Freaks have still had time to pick up some groundbreaking tracks to carry the torch for the label - most noticeably Doc L.Jnr's 'How Ya Doin' described by Seven as 'a wonderful record, beautiful in both concept and execution, immaculately tasteful, marvellously inspired'.
