Full of innovation, Velizar delivers diverse and dynamic sound within the pulsating grooves of Electronica House Techno. Bored of self-imposed conceptual constraints, Velizar shows that he possesses a musical versatility - and, more importantly, that he has enough soul to musically communicate feelings to delightfully break into our consciousness.
One of the first DJs in East Europe that popularized electronic music in the region, Velizar has held residencies at the legendary Country Club on the beach in Sozopol, a city built by the ancient Greeks on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, as well as at the Chervilo (Lipstick), Cutty Sark, and Kampione Clubs in Sofia.
When the Bulgarian communist party collapsed in 1989, Velizar, a/k/a Chocho, was a child only 8 years old. His musical influences are the genres that flooded into Bulgaria during its ensuing transition from communism to a free-market economy: jazz, blues, funk, pop, hip hop, alternative, rock and new wave to ambient and the beginnings of techno and house.
Velizar was an aspiring rapper in a local group when he was introduced to DJing. He began his career mixing with cassette tapes and experimenting with everything from old school classics to out of space avant-garde. Like a lot of Bulgarian teenagers, he took advantage of the lawless political climate and began clubbing at the age of 14. By 17, he had developed a passion for electronic music and was a full time Dj, playing across the country.
Determined to conquer NYC and to transport new audiences on his supersonic voyages, Velizar left his homeland in 2001 and moved to New York. Since then, he has been involved in the NYC underground music scene and has been collaborating with various musicians, Djs and producers in the search of new avenues for his ever-evolving music sound. Currently, Velizar is the headliner for In Progress Sessions as well as the resident Dj for Elegantly Wasted in New York City.
