Voodeux

The artist known as Voodeux is in fact two separate talents united together in name and mission. James Watts (a/k/a KiloWatts) and Tanner Ross share a knowledge of music synthesis that should make even the most gifted electronic music producers seem like amateurs. Their collaboration goes back six years when they met online at a website devoted to music synths and production. Ross had just bought a computer and was looking to get into music-making and Watts guided him through his first lessons. They've been collaborating ever since. "We started doing collaborations," says Ross, "not dance music but… weirder shit."

Tanner Ross, a music synthesis major at esteemed music school Berklee in Boston is now a respected producer in his own right and Watts has a full five albums, much of it deliriously psychedelic soundscapes for labels like Native State, HoloPhon and Diffusion. The duo has releases on mothership's sister label, dirtybird, and their recent output includes a remix of the Blaze classic "Lovelee Dae." "Essentially, there's never a time when we work on a track that there's a disagreement about anything," says Ross of the partnership. "Some people want to take charge even when it's not necessary, but with me and hi, it's easy as hell."

Despite the 300 miles that separate the two producers, modern technology keeps the pair in perfect lockstep. "We pass back and forth project files," says Ross. "He adds to my idea and I add to his idea and he adds to my idea and I add to his idea and the track is done." Voodeux is their darker, deeper techno project and the sound suits the collaboration so well a full album is in the works.
