Founded in 1998 the label's first release was a cd compilation that featured tracks by Rhythm n Sound, Beanfield, Sad Rockets, Maus and Stolle among others. Right from the beginning the focus of the label was to release un-known artists as well as to be a platform for debut releases from artists. This idea is reflected in the name of the label, 'raum' which translates as 'room' in English. You could say that the label philosophy was basically to give room for new music as well as leaving room for more than one particular style. Even so the trademark sound of the early years was definitely more dub related. The main artists of that first breed were D.Diggler, Dub Taylor, Dave Dk amongst others. In this earlier phase the label released about twenty singles, including two more compilations and a few albums. Some of the releases were more techno based while others were more minimal or even house related. In 2001 a new artist, who also started working for the label, joined Raum. The name of this artist was Dorian Paic. He knew the label owner Olaf Zern from the Freebase Recordstore in Frankfurt where they both work. As Dorian got more involved in the label work Olaf decided to pass over the A'n'R work to him. Dorian's experience of working as a DJ for almost ten years (at that time), his work at Freebase and extensive experience with all kinds of electronic music made him a prime person for this position. They were then joined by Patrick Zeimer whose job it is to care of all the promotion and press work.
Since then quite a few new artists have joined the label. They have helped carve out a broader sound for the label, transcending and including the original "dub vibe" of the early releases. Artists like Richard Davis, Jeff Bennet and Sami Liuski, also known as Bangkok Impact, have released under different alter egos. Steve Bug, Bernd Maus and Alexander Kowalski have also provided remixes for the label. Others like Sweet n Candy from Berlin, or Dominik Eulberg, who was almost unknown when he released his first single for raum...musik, as well as the London based Dub Kult and Stuttgart based Patrick Chardronnet are the new breed developing the label's profile these days. The music from this latest crop still hold true to the original ideas of the label - namely to be open for all kinds of music which can still be put in club context.
