Will Ibiza be named as part of President Bush-brain’s Axis of Evil? If legislation before the United States House of Representatives gets passed, then maybe we’ll get invaded too.
Everybody knows the current U.S. Administration is run by a bunch of killjoy fascists. The simplistic rhetoric of George Dubblethink repeatedly contains words like “freedom”, even though the number of people in U.S. prisons and jails last year topped 2 million for the first time. And that figure doesn’t even include juveniles. In fact they’ve locked up so many people they’ve had to start letting them go. Programs scheduling the early release of non-violent prisoners, including drug offenders, have taken place in a number of states.
Despite this environment, the hypocrisy continues. U.S. authorities have pushed laws that would mean promoters could be prosecuted for the drug taking at their events. Yes, you read that right. The RAVE (Reducing Americans Vulnerability to Ecstasy – catchy, huh?) Act got defeated last year, because of the eruption of protest it caused. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that laws that broad in scope could be used against organisers of just about any event. But it’s back again in 2003, though this time in a different guise.
The accompanying rhetoric purports that these moves are for the public good, yet nowhere would they have to prove that any injury to any person took place. An event where all the particpants had a fantastic night and got home safely wcould stil get done. In fact the presence of sensible health advice, water, ambulances and paramedics could be taken as tacit admission of guilt. These bills threaten to drive dj-driven events and dancing back underground.
As an industry, we need to show a high degree of self-regulation. Some leading figures deny any association with risk-taking activity, but they are patently talking bollocks. There are dangers, as there are in participating in any number of recreational activities, from skiing to sex to sky-diving. These need to be managed, but not by the full coercive power of the state.
