The community appreciation of the contribution the venerable night life institution Pacha makes to both the winter and the summer scenes can be measured in column inches. No other venue is likely to receive such luminous editorial in local papers in any region in the world, but Pacha’s advertising spend is presumably proportional to its coverage.

Media mud has been hurled however; in one interview the director of rival club Amnesia in Sant Rafel criticised Pacha’s good working relationship with the authorities. Valid concerns about the uneven enforcement of regulations aside, perhaps Pacha should instead be looked to as a model of neighbourhood integration. Everybody wants to go to Pacha.

Why? Well right about now it’s near enough the only loud place open. It might not be the scalding, stroking, she-beast of summer, but as the warmest option on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights it attracts both committed fans and plenty of passing trade. Booking the UK dance music’s biggest name last Saturday didn't hurt the attendance at their already popular Saturday night.

Mr Peter Tong doesn’t live in the island in the winter, but apparently has a house here. He is tied for no. 472 on the Sunday Times top 500 UK earners poll with Sophie Ellis Bextor who sang “Why does it feel so good?” on Spiller’s 2000 hit ‘Groovejet’ which Tong almost certainly hammered on his Radio One show. If only he'd scratched it off the playlist then he'd have beaten that bitch back into 473rd where she belongs. They are each estimated to have earned €2.3 million last year.

We asked club spokesman Mark Nettto if it was true Pete charges a euro per second to dj.
“If it is, he’s not getting that here,” said the moustachioed South African last Friday, who insisted they get their flights and a “token” payment. “They play for the locals and to promote their summer residencies.” Pacha is looking to put on monthly international guests - Erick Morillo might be coming and Smokin’ Jo definitely is, in January. Def Mix’s Bobby D’Ambrosio’s doing New Year’s Eve.

[/center]Personal faves What’s Up have dates booked for December 20, January 17 and this Saturday (November 22). “Glamour gay” night Scandal will next run on December 7, with Dj Kae. Another one is scheduled for January 5.

But first in line is the hip hop night Fiasco in Pachacha, a club within a club, which begins its weekly Thursday run starting tomorrow, November 20.
