Celebrated British aerosol artist, Xenz, announces a 'pop up' show in Ibiza at La Hora Azul gallery in August 2010

One of the UK’s most respected spray can artists, Xenz, lands in Ibiza this August 21 to create an exhibition of new artworks inspired by the Balearic Islands' ethereal essence. Known as the 'Monet of graffiti' – so-called because he channels his love of nature through this traditionally urban art form – Xenz is a major figure to emerge from the infamous Bristol street art scene.

Earlier this year, the artist visited Ibiza in search of inspiration and the result is a series of paintings featuring the island's native birds, butterflies, vines, and flowers presented as a mosaic-style masterpiece comprising hundreds of small canvas tiles, which collectively form a mural.

Xenz explains: 'My aim is to develop a community around these mosaics, where people who come to the show are the only ones to ever see it in its complete state – a bit like seeing graffiti before it’s buffed or destroyed. Each participant becomes part-owner of the mural – almost like buying shares.'

To complement the show, which the artist describes as a 'fantasy greenhouse,' Xenz will be painting onto the exterior building of La Galeria Elefante – one of the oldest fincas [country houses] in Ibiza. Using the island’s springtime flora and fauna as inspiration, Xenz, who has painted walls – and even church ceilings – across the globe since the early ‘90s, will be working his art into the existing natural landscape in the trompe-l’oeil style giving visitors to the show the chance to see the artwork growing over the facade of this beautiful building.

The artist says: 'I see my artwork like an organism; like ivy or an orchid that mutates and grows in unusual places. This is the graffiti in it; the wild, unstoppable, destructive element, but it is also beautiful. I like to make things look like they've always been there.”

Xenz has been shown in exhibitions and art fairs in the UK, Miami, New York, Basel and Sydney. He has had sell-out London solo shows, and his limited edition prints are in huge demand. He was part of the prestigious Tunnel 228 (a collaboration between the Old Vic and one of the UK’s most innovative performance companies, Punchdrunk) alongside Antony Micallef, Polly Morgan and Paul Fryer. His work is in private and corporate collections worldwide. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art.

Who is Dr Lektroluv?

Hailing from the vast flatlands of Belgium, the Green, half-human bespectacled pioneer is an enigma. Not much is known about this mysterious, 6ft tall being, other than an ability to blend and create a potent, intoxicating brew of big room sounds, hard 4-4 beats and jacking, twitching electro that sends high-voltage charges through his subjects.

 

Without any implications toward his personality and character, it is unclear who or what the Green Giant is or where he has come from - other than that he resides in an abandoned hospital somewhere in Ghent, formulating and creating potent musical concoctions. Dr. Lektroluv has released no less than ten mix-compilations since 2002, showcasing his crazy, sonic experiments deep from his lab in Ghent, where people have reportedly recalled seeing him walk around giddily in dishelved focus, heavily infected with a case of the Lektro virus.

Summing up Niyi is no easy task. With a musical repertoire as (refreshingly) unpredictable as a crate of mischievous puppies, this softly-spoken 'rapper' cannot be lumped into an existing categories: and so he is forging his own...

The genre-bending musical path began six years ago when Niyi's creative juices turned to flow against the current at Central St. Martin's, leading him to drop out. Twice. His energies went into founding a new seminal club, 'Gauche Chic', which 'The Sunday Times' credits as having been the kick-start behind the Nu-Rave dressing-up phenomenon. News of Niyi's tempo-switching and generally odd approach to DJ-ing flagged him up on the music radar, and though his delightfully irreverent DJ-ing style once managed to clear the floor at Fabric, 'Gauche Chic' drew a savvy crowd: Gareth Pugh and Björk were often seen shaking a leg on the dance floor to hybrids of surf-rock and hardcore gabba. Every Tuesday for one year queues snaked outside his weekly 'I Heart Niyi' night at 'Punk' in Soho, London. One such Tuesday during London Fashion Week 2008 saw the club night join forces with the 'Super Super Magazine' party, which had Lady Gaga performing alongside Niyi's DJ Set. Other guest DJs and performers at 'Punk' have included Calvin Harris, Golden Silvers and Little Boots. Niyi has enjoyed guest slots on Radio 1 and Xfm, interviews on Steve Lamacq's show, as well as remix duties for artists such as 'The Puppet Mastaz' and 'Crazy Girl'. Beyond DJ and remix activities, Niyi's own musical creations are of an equally cheeky, genre-defying calibre.

Multipurpose, genuine and in possession of a very sparky, inspired chunk of grey matter, this young man will first leave you a little speechless and in no time at all will have you chanting: I HEART NIYI.

There are few electronic music lovers that haven’t already heard Jamie Anderson’s work. He has proved himself as a long-term force to be reckoned within the dance music scene, not only through his own broad spectrum of production talents across the colours of dance music but also from his exceptionally high quality DJ and live performances around the globe.

Jamie first made his name internationally in the early 90's and quickly became a recognised pioneer of the UK Tech-House scene. Coming from a strong musical background growing up around musicians in West London and training in improvisation and keyboards with Bristol based Jazz aficionado Dave Buxton, Jamie set up Artform Studios where he engineers and produces the majority of his work and collaborations.

Having never allowed himself to be pigeon-holed or categorised, instead he looks forward to create new sounds rather than follow trends. Yiannis had already completed a first album within a year of begining his experimentations. He now has tracks signed on an international scale; labels include: BDivision (Italy), Remud Productions (Italy) Iniminimax (Brazil), Madhatters (London) just to name a few and often does remix work. His DJ portfolio is arguably even more impressive, having entertained club crowds at the likes of Turnmills, Ministry of Sound, Pacha, SeOne, Hidden and Scala. Yiannis has also visited sunny Ibiza, Greece and Oslo (Norway) and played at boatparties as well as different bars with his style of music that ranges from tech house to his biggest love, techno. 

Yiannis has an endless list of musical influences, featuring Hawtin, Magda, Carl Cox, Chris Leibing, Stephan Bodzin, Loco Dice, Claude Von Stroke. Yiannis Balkizas has gone from strength to strength in the club scene and will only get bigger.

Fabrik In Sessions in Ibiza this summer

“In Sessions” is Fabrik’s touring concept, showcasing the future of underground electronic music to the world.  It was launched at Fabrik Madrid, a club now ranked 11th Best club in the world by DJMAg after their 2010 poll, and this summer the tour will reside in Ibiza for every Saturday night of this summer season whilst the Madrid venue shuts its doors for its holidays before re-opening again in September.

You can expect a taste of the huge Fabrik Madrid experience courtesy of all their added production, a very special sound system, visuals and artwork as well as their enthusiasm and party throwing experience.  All of the artists on offer at the events have been handpicked for their own individual sounds which are all already much loved by those music heads in the know. Artists include Ramon Tapia, Joseph Capriati, Simon Baker, Deep Groove,  D Box & Beckers, Spektre, Alan Fitzpatrick,  Kanio, Jamie Anderson, Rebekkah, Adam Shelton, Jet Project, and Ketoloco

The venue, Summum,  has been picked owing to its intimate size and unique décor (which was designed by the same guy who designed Café Del Mar) which means this will be a very special opportunity to catch some big names in small places giving the parties and extra special edge.   A lot of the artists will be first timers to island but after playing events like these, it surely won’t be their last. At the same time that means Fabrik are keen to introduce some fresh, original and exciting artists both to the party Isle and to you the music lover.

Once you have been to one of these parties you will be pleased to know that the party does not stop at 6am.  For a very limited amount of lucky ravers, there will be a magical boat party experience taking you to The Magical rock of Es Vedra with the Fabrik resident DJs sound tracking the trip: awesome!

What’s more, over these summer months, the Fabrik artists will be producing the ‘In Sessions Album’ out on the Island. It will be a truly Balearic influenced soundtrack that will be released later on in the year.

DJs will include all manner of stars from a range of genres.  House, both deep and techy, techno, both minimal and driving, and everything in between will all be represented by the likes of Deep Groove,  D Box & Beckers, Spektre, Alan Fitzpatrick,  Kanio, Jamie Anderson, Rebekkah, Adam Shelton, Jet Project, and Ketoloco.  Between them, that little lot make records for some leading labels like Sci+Tec,  Drumcode, 3030 Lovers, Cocoon and more so their talents and skills are unquestionable.

As well as all that the stellar Fabrik residents will be on rotation at all the parties throughout the season so…  If you haven’t made the plunge and taken a trip out to Madrid, summer in Ibiza this year offers you the perfect opportunity to get a taste of Fabrik, the World’s Clubbing Mecca.

IBIZA SUNSET YACHTING is a weekly catamaran boat party that captures the special moments of an Ibiza day: celebrating the event when the day is turning into the night with a great party while catamaran cruising to Formentera.

The line-up on Tuesday afternoons is featuring selected international DJ’s as System of Survival (Circoloco) and SIS (Cocoon) who in June were playing offshore house music, supported by handpicked island residents.
