Call me old fashioned, but I do like a bit of planning behind a release. Traditionally the B side will feature a remix, or another track by the same artist. Maybe a stripped down version or an accapella. I don't even mind the odd DJ tool.
But lumping 2 totally different tunes with entirely different appeal onto the same EP purely because the artists come from the same city smacks of laziness and a slightly shoddy respect for the beautiful art of promoting and displaying music. I know that retail sales are down and digital profits are a fraction of previously enjoyed benefits, but still, a good track deserves a little attention, and a good artist support.
Both these featured producers are on the up. Emerging from the Parisiene underground scene Rose, who with her DJ partner Ulysse has been hosting the Puzzle parties at the old Freak'n'Chic venue Batofar since last year, comes out with her first solo release here and more than proves her worth. Madame Shamanbo is a driving, heavily percussive piece of tech-funk that is kept energetic and airy through its clever juxtaposition of a springy baseline over dark reverbs. Increasingly weird mechanical sounds interject routinely, as a spooky vocal remains just out of ears reach. It's a mature sound and one well worthy of it's own remix or solo release. Reviews are already streaming in from DJs charting and raving about it. A dance floor killer in the making I believe.
Track 2, which I refuse to call the B side. Is a whole other story. If I somehow managed to squeeze back inside my mothers womb, whilst high on jellies and with all my limbs removed, then it still wouldn't come close to how warm and fuzzy this record is. From the initial intro, a gentle pulse like a familiar heartbeat courses throughout, until it's joined by a skipping crescendo of what almost sounds like an accordion. Verging of folkish, Bricolage displays all the jazz influence of Anthony Collin's style whilst still remaining focused on the after-hour club. Probably best served in the sunshine, accompanied by giant smiles and ever bigger sunglasses.
Liebe Detail, might profess to do just that, but maybe a little more attention to detail would have afforded these 2 talents in the making their own separate releases? Bring on the remixes I say.
