Go BackPostcard from the edge - Reboot’s psychedelic 'Letters' on Cadenza.

Cadenza's next release follows much the same playful-yet-seedy formula for which they have become known. Like Sunday afternoons being tossed around upside down by your favourite uncle - it feels fun but the undercurrent is ever so slightly wrong. 'Be Tougher' is Frank Heinrich, AKA Reboot's, chance to do just that.

Following the jaunty success of his breakout record Charlotte (on Below) he turns to the dark side here for a 10 minute take on a teen horror movie. A lively, skipping beat is tempered by a deep ominous voice, intoning: 'Here I Am' stalking through the track. Dance floor paranoids fear not. The voice isn 't coming from your head. It's the sort of record that will live its best moments at the end of a long session when melodies have left the party and the beats can bubble freely.

'Letters' doesn't indicate exactly where it was written. I can only assume from a spring break to the Left Field. Basic intro bars build with a couple of skipped beats, some warm, jazzy percussion and a few hi-hat breakdowns; so far so good. But about five minutes in something strange happens. Did the postman finally come up on that acid? Or did Reboot just have a few other bits of tracks he'd already started and felt the need to slip them in?

I'm all for experimenting with genres but, aside from the super distorted woogie boards which do add an interesting twist, the rest - including the African chanting - seems sensationalist.

Far out jazz breakdowns and midsection wobbles are de rigueur right now, particularly coming from eastern European DJs and producers, and it is exciting stuff when done in the right way. Letters' just has a brief psychedelic interlude; within two minutes you're back in the room. It would be great if someone could find a cohesive way to incorporate tribal rhythms into clean minimal sounds, unfortunately this isn't the track that does it.
