Ibiza Voice found the old-school party spirit alive and well in Madrid, where we have touched down for the Goa closing party, which reminded us just how much things have changed on our favourite island. Once upon a time in Ibiza you could party all the time. Clubs like Ku and Amnesia stood open to starry nights and if you weren't in a club you might be dancing on the beach at one of Ibiza's infamous Full Moon parties. Now, you'd be excused for thinking these halcyon days are gone forever.
Not at Goa though. Here time has stood still - or perhaps moved forward - as the organisers have worked in harmony with the authorities to create some of the best parties in Europe - a rave in the heart of the city, with all the crazy/beautiful people you could hope to meet. And closing is no exception as 15,000 party people gathered beneath blazing sunshine to give Goa an almighty farewell shout before the club arrives at Space on 11 July for its summer residency.
The main indoor arena is rocking to the muscular beats of Dubfire, who continues to surprise and delight with his newfound underground sound. He impressed in Miami at the unveiling of his Sci+Tec party and is clearly thriving. Outside, partner Space has brought a taste of Ibiza talent to the party with Javi Munoz and Mirko Loko on the decks.
In the second outdoor area the French Freak n' Chic label posse have taken over, sending snaking deep electronic melodies through the highly charged air. Dan Ghenacia, Anthony,Collins, Dyed Soundorom, Shonky, Marc Antona all have extensive Ibiza experience so it's easy to imagine them revelling in the unexpected freedom to actually play in the open air again.
Unlike the repressively strict (and largely illogical) new rules applied to Ibiza clubbing there is a sense here in Madrid, dancing at the heart of thousands of partiers, packed into the nation's capital, that anything is possible. Rather than viewing clubbing as an ugly nuisance or a threat to an imagined way of life Goa shows it's possible to have fun and freedom. It will be interesting to see if that balance continues when Goa arrives at Space. Here's hoping so… and hoping that Ibiza learns a lesson from its mainland counterparts.
