Over a million people have heard the clip on youtube since last May. A Michigan cop confiscated a bust of marijuana and decided, instead of declaring it, to bake brownies for himself and his wife, resulting in the fairly hilarious outcome of him calling 911 for rescue under the mistaken illusion that they were both overdosing and quite possibly already dead…'time is going by really really really slowly.'
Of those million who've had a mild chuckle over the incident, only 1 it seems wasn't too stoned to sample it and make a track out of the whole thing. Good old Crosstown Rebel Jamie Jones for dragging himself out of the depths of the sofa and into the studio.
How many times after a big fat reefer, and perhaps a cookie or two, does a recorded snippet sound like it'd make a great record, only to fade into the recesses of the mind once the effect has worn off and real life sensibility kicks back in? Thankfully '911' doesn't descent into gimmickville and actually has the strength of production to back up the comedy value of the sample. Somewhere halfway between Marshall Jefferson's Mushrooms and 4Hero's Mr Kirk's Nightmare there is a deep block-rocking groove with a great warp of a sub-bass to wipe the smirk off anyone's face.
A haunting piano tinkle and the echo effect of the vocal loop midway through reminds you of the overdose theme, yet there's enough of an genuine record here to lose minds on the dance floor and perhaps even enough to have your own partial overdose to if the mood were right.
The end snippet of the track makes a neat social commentary of the state of prescription drug usage in the United States, as if we needed that, but aside from being rather obvious, the vocal is sampled perfectly and balanced with chemical precision for the rest of the tune. This is only a one sided release from Jamie, but we think that's probably as much as anyone should take to avoid adverse reactions. Let it be a warning to you.
