Getting your grubby mitts on a Mike Monday record is a bit like catching up with an old mate down the pub. He's got that familiar charm that reminds you of good times but there's something new and exciting; tales of fresh adventures, a pristine perspective. Such is the case with I Am Plankton / Salieri Complex, his second single from his eagerly anticipated sophomore set Songs Without Words - Part One

This fun-packed four-track EP kicks off with Salieri Complex, a slow-burning ode to deeper, Detroit inspired discs. Imagine Jeff Mills remixing Jay Dee's Plastic Dreams under the watchful eye of Ewan Pearson - the groove is relentless, the funk is in abundance, thanks, in the main to some fine key work, but the real hook is a nagging electronic hook mid way. It's classic Mike Monday (think Bhalobashi or I Dream Of Ducks) but with a distinctive melodic twist tailor made for that transitional tune that takes you from warm up to shake down.

It's I Am Plankton, however, that's the key track. Served up in two forms, they're both destined for ultimate dancefloor success in two completely different ways. The original is a sonic abyss; a somnambulant deep sea strut, it conjures up notions of a tripped out wonderland where nothing is quite what it seems.

If you've heard Brennan Green's recent remix of Luke Solomon's Demons it's of a similar hazy, dramatic nature and will twist the minds of any back room loungers or warm up warriors this summer and beyond.

The Glug Glug Dub of I Am Plankton is a totally different ocean of fish; deeply trippy techno at its most melodic, there's a definite air of Audion as the original's bubblesome hook gets twisted into a cascading punch that works its way inside out and back out again. Perfect for those peak time freak outs, this is already working the floors.  Mike finishes off this generous package with Catnip, a timely reminder of the skill he's shown for years. A mid tempo funk number with a slight nod towards Prince, it takes of where the likes of Zum Zum left us - dazed and confused on the dancefloor. And if you think this is good, just wait until you hear his album, out late September, I've heard it - it's just like catching up with an old friend.
