Just 27 years from it was first recognised and 20 years on from hard hitting public awareness campaigns, HIV and AIDS are modern day pandemics. AIDS related deaths stand at 25 million, making it one of the most devastating epidemics in known history. The facts speak for themselves:

  • In 2007 2.1 million people died of an AIDS-related illness
  • 2.5 million new infections in 2006 with 1.7 million of these in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Every thirteen seconds a new infection takes place.
  • 5,700 people die every day of AIDS related causes.

Young people are most greatly affected:

  • Of the 6,800 people newly infected with HIV every day, more than half are under 25 years old.
  • About 1,200 of those who become infected on a daily basis are under the age of 15.
  • 15 million children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to AIDS

Dance4Life is an organization that aims to "inspire, mobilize and unite young people to push back HIV and AIDS 4Life". The philosophy is simple; empower young people with the knowledge and awareness to make a difference in combating this terror that plagues modern times.

Dance4life make it clear to every young person involved: this isn't "boring books, preaching or homework, it's about dance, music, media, events, drumming, videos and taking responsibility for yourself and others."

The target of actively involving 1 million youths - as "Agents of Change" prior to World AIDS Day in 2014, signals the intent of the Dance4life message. This has also been helped by having ambassadors such as Tiesto, who you will recall released a single with Maxi Jazz entitled "Dance4life" in order to raise awareness.

On behalf of Dance4life, the Consell Insular D' Eivissa and ALAS (Balearic Association Against AIDS), we can proudly announce that from September Ibiza will pioneer the first Dance4life education programme in Spain. This will be aimed at 1500 students aged 15-17 years and will continue until at least 2014.

The Ibicenco Minister for Health and Social Services, Patricia Abascal, a Dance4life ambassador herself, will also be representing the project to the Govern de les Illes Baleares. The objective is that this education programme will be continued throughout Spain.

One of the key dates in the Dance4life calendar is the international Dance4life event on 29th November, just prior to World AIDS Day, which is celebrated on December 1st each year. Unsurprisingly, this event is a celebration of music, arts and dancing with the highlight being a live link up between young participants across 5 continents and pretty much all time zones.

The Consell Insular D' Eivissa is naturally keen that Ibicenco schools are included within this link up and consequently, there is an event to be planned. We know the 'when' - 29th November - so that just leaves the 'who', 'where' and 'how'. The 'why', you might think, needs no explanation, right? Sadly that is still not the case.

Along with famine, this disease is the greatest threat to human life that exists today. By its nature, the more it grows the greater threat there becomes to increased infection and death. Yet, unbelievably it is still a thoroughly misunderstood and stigmatised issue, particularly in areas with limited exposure to information and education. Do something positive and educate yourself.

Help raise awareness, donate, protect yourself during sex and let's 'start dancing, stop aids. dance4life'.
