When we reported mid-season about Cocoon Ibiza 2008, there was not a bad word to say. The problem, in fact, was trying to describe just how good it was.
Since those heady days in mid August, and particularly since the return of Circo Loco, the parties have been wild for sure, but I think the Dice/Luciano combo that night was a peak. A peak in terms of music quality, in terms of the amount of fun had and in terms of the amount of people squeezed into the one time farmhouse turned money making machine and den of insobriety. Cocoon has to be one of few club nights in the world that has a busier DJ booth and VIP than main dancefloor.
There was, however, one last story to tell - a closing party with the Cocoon 'A-Team' on show for only the second occasion this season. Sven and Richie in the main room coupled with Ricardo , Luciano & Zip on the terrace.
The beauty of Cocoon in 2008 has been the diversity of the music on parade. Being utterly content with their brand and their style and their sound has allowed nearly all the artists, especially the regulars, a degree of flexibility and eclecticism that might usually be restricted. So whilst we got a dose of own tracks 'Mind Games' and 'Fusion' by Sven and big tracks of the summer like 'Grindhouse' by Radioslave (the Dubfire mix of course), we were also treated to some really twisted progressive and hypnotic sounds, more akin to a trippy journey than pulsating techno. An epic track such as 'Klugh' by David Alvarado was one of the tracks I heard that took me back a few years.
Yet, the draw of the terrace was like a magnet once again. I just couldn't keep away from it. Ricardo played his own 'Dexter' and 'Dinamo' by Nathan Fake, Luciano played everything from Chilean folk music to gritty computer language sounds. Naturally, Trompeta by Sis, which has came from nowhere to be contender for Ibiza Tune of the Summer threatened to take the roof.
But then, the last couple of hours were pure house music. There was the odd darker moment, a few bleeps and bloops, but it was just simple rockin 4/4 house music. I'm reluctant to actually call it funky house, but at times that was the best way I could think of describing it. Put it this way, we covered the whole spectrum, from progressive stormers to high octane tech through the most throbbing deep grooves and chunky, funky house. No really! If you don't believe me, I even heard one track that was so similar to Harmonizer by Jose Nunez, I'm still trying to convince myself it wasn't the Subliminal classic.
The vibe throughout was latin, no question, unadultered passionate latin house music by the Chilean born superstar DJs raised in Europe. There was hardly an interlude or beat that passed without one of them "doing a Ricardo", or should that be "doing a Luciano". You know what I mean: one arm in the air, finger probing away to the beat, swaying from side to side, followed by a massive sweaty hug for someone in the booth. Whatever, 3000 people plus "doing a Ricardo/Luciano" is a sight to behold.
And so, with the time approaching 8 in the morning, it was left to Ricardo to deliver the final magical moment of what has been an incredible Cocoon season. Remembering the sweet sounds of Ravel's Bolero as his choice of last tune for 2007, I knew we'd be in for something different and certainly a surprise.
Then came the profound, sexual, Parisian beat of a familiar record that over the course of the 2 minute intro suddenly dawned upon the packed terrace, right up until the moment that the first lyrics began - "strange I've seen that face before……". The record was Grace Jones - Libertango; nearly brought a tear to my eye. Magnifique!
