Founded by Federico Molinari and Nekes, Oslo has only one thing in mind… The Dancefloor.
In less than two years Oslo has become one of the most talked about labels in house and techno. Embracing the warmth and melody of house and the cyclical, loopy aspects of good techno, Oslo acted as the saviour for crowds who began to tire of the stripped back minimal sounds. "It happens with every trend once it's been there for a while," explains Federico. "I think we started the label at a good time."
Like all good labels, Oslo is based around a family of good friends. Based in Mannheim, many of the label players such as Johnny D, Christian Burkhardt, Damian Schwartz, Vera, Miss Fitz, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts and Ray Okpara have known each other for years, having been regular faces at Frankfurt's influential parties such as Time Warp and Milk Club.
"We offer the people another kind of music that is more warm, with the focus on the groove," says Federico. "As long as it's groovy and has something special that we like, we release it. We are able to contribute with something new that people were waiting for. Of course it's nothing completely new - it's actually an old concept with new influences and contemporary interpretations."
Old or new, with dancefloor dynamite such as Christian Burkhardt's rumbling Kreiskollaps (the debut that kicked off the whole Oslo explosion), Johnny D's monstrous club smash Orbitalife or anything on their deeper, more experimental imprint Love Letters From Oslo, Oslo have been, and remain to be, a breath of fresh air for dancefloors the world over. Claiming "every record has been a highlight," there's a passion among the Oslo family that's hard to find among many new labels. And with reactions from some of the scene's biggest players such as Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Loco Dice, Zip and Tobi Neuman, it's not hard to see where this passion and enthusiasm come from.
"It's nice to have a platform for the music you like," says Federico."It's like a musical ID card; people get an idea of what you like and what you do, musically speaking." Check out Oslo's output and there's no mistaking what they do… Great music aimed directly at the dancefloor.
