In what can only be seen as a bleak year for London's nightlife, December will be the month the capital says goodbye to another of its clubbing institutions. Shoreditch's T-Bar finally closes its doors after five years, a half-decade that's been often trailblazing, sometimes controversial, frequently insane, but always musically essential. And in the final month of this year, it will give the public its own extended Christmas present with its own '12 Days of T Bar' as it seeks to go out with a bang before its move in the new year.  

Opening at a time when east of Shoreditch High Street still felt like the outer limits, the ground floor of the cultural and artistic hub that is the Tea Building had a fairly inauspicious start, but the quality of its nights and the installation of a certain soundsystem put it on the map. It would be disingenuous to pin the arrival of a Funktion One as its birth, but the headlines it caused only served to further enforce its mystique and herald clubbers from far and wide to its intimate surroundings.  

In truth, it was the blend of promotions and ridiculously non-existent door tax that was its winning formula. Where else in London could you see Loco Dice for free on a Monday night or Anja Schneider on a Wednesday? And the list of nights over the years read like a who's who of British and European talent. 

From Damian Lazarus and Michael Mayer's Stink, to Sunday's debauched crack-on Dig Your Own Rave, it's hosted nights from the likes of Leftroom, Freak 'n' Chic, Mobilee, record shop Phonica, and monthly residencies from luminaries such as Giles Smith, Ivan Smagghe, and Andrew Weatherall. It's been a jewel in the musical crown of East London. 

But all good things, as they often say, must come to an end, and the line ups that fill the last dirty dozen days are as monumental as any before them, and, as always, mind-bogglingly free.
