There's an innate sense of playfulness in everything Wagon Repair does. The wild-eyed eclecticism of the music, the distinctive label artwork, the track titles…

Even the label's name boasts a great sense of fun. It's not surprising, then, when the label tell us that "being able to release the music of people we love doesn't get better than this !"

What began in 2004 as a group project between Mathew Jonson, Konrad Black, Graham Boothby and Jesse Fisk is now a deeply ingrained presence on electronic music's psyche. Electronic music being the operative word - if there's one thing Wagon Repair isn't, it's predictable. While techno never strays too far away from their front door, they're kings of the curveball; you never know what to expect from a Wagon Repair label - even if you're familiar with the artist's output.

Ranging from the deep dub of Deadbeat to the slippery stargazing soul of Minilogue via the many faces of Mathew Jonson, including his well-respected Cobblestone Jazz project, Wagon Repair have achieved an ear-watering discography in their short, but perfectly formed, four years. Other label attractions include the fractured future disco of Mole, the frenetic filth from Seth Troxler under his Sex Trother guise and Luca Bacchetti's deep sonorous techno.

With attention to detail on every release, it's evident Wagon Repair are passionate about what they do - each release is given its own identity, decorated with unique artwork by their artistic director Frank. Not only do they stand out from the crowd sonically, but they jump out of the record shelves, too. Wagon Repair's passion is so strong, that on their MySpace recently they made an emotive plea to stop illegal downloads. They asked their fans to comment on the whole situation and returned every comment, even ones that didn't have anything to do with the subject in hand.  How many other labels spare that much time to their fans?

Yes, there's a great sense of playfulness, but there's also an abundance of gravitas and groove. A winning combination for a label that we're set to hear a lot more from in future…
