It was with great sadness that news of the imminent closure of one London's true hotbeds for electronic music was received in autumn this year.

After 13 years, The End will close on January 24th 2009 having inspired a generation and seen the just about every DJ worth seeing during that time.

The main reason for the closing of the club is twofold, "key people in the team were ready to move on, which coincided with us being made an offer on the building and we felt it time to pursue different roads" explained The End's directors Layo and Zoe Paskin.

"It's been a very tough decision, I can't yet really picture what it's going to be like to close the doors on the last day, it's an impossible emotion to try and reach... it wasn't a purely financial decision" continues Zoe. Layo further clarifies "We've had offers for the club before, and yes, this was the best one. But I wouldn't say that it's so good that it makes this a purely financial issue - it's a circumstantial issue, coupled with financial. If it was seven or eight years ago, an offer like this wouldn't have been accepted. It's a lot to do with the timing."

The timing referred to for the Paskins is that without some staff, who are basically like part of the furniture at the West Central Street club, then The End just wouldn't be The End anymore. Add in a chunky, hard to refuse offer and well we're left with under 2 months to enjoy a true champion of innovative and cutting edge dance music. Furthermore, it is a melancholy adieu to yet another of one of London's iconic clubspots. Naturally, there is going to be one of helluva send off, starting in style with a 13th Birthday bash with master of ceremonies Sven Vath, on Saturday 6th December.
