Matthew Dear - aka Audion aka False aka Jabberjaw -has been defying genres and pushing musical boundaries for nearly a decade now. Yet, whilst the American has been filed under everything from ac id to jazz to hip hop to soul, it is his excellence in the field of minimal techno of the last 4 years where he has become most prominent.
The founding artist of the Michigan based Ghostly International and sublabel Spectral Sound, Dear has also had successful releases on M-nus and Plus 8 (as False) and Perlon (as Jabberjaw). Audion, however, remains his most illustrious personification marked by the seminal 'Fabric 27' and energetic live performances. It was, in fact, during one such session at dc10 in 2007 that P. Diddy hit the dancefloor.
2008 has been a quieter year production wise for Dear, with a slave like DJ tour schedule on the back of his 'Asa Breed' album from the end of 2007, yet he has still managed to squeeze in a Get Physical compilation release, Body Language Vol. 7, and a Sasha remix along the way. As we look forward to more Audion productions in early 2009, Matthew gave us his confidential brief.
1) Where do you call home?
Brooklyn, New York
2) Were you happy as a child?
I was ecstatic.
3) How much did your childhood help you in becoming an artist?
Childhood is a wild and happy dream. I pull from those emotions and memories quite often when making music.
4) Do you believe in fate / God?
I believe in chance and something far greater than me which is unexplainable.
5) What or who is the biggest inspiration in your life?
Culture.
6) Children, yes or no?
I love children, but at this speed, I wouldn't have time to be the father I need to be.
7) Who is your idol and why?
Those who have devoted their lives to art and sacrificed normalcy for a life of performance.
8) What's the weirdest thing you've done to play at a gig?
I've played 6 different parties in one weekend before.
9) Which artist or track did you think was no good but became successful?
It would have to be one of mine. I'm my own worst critic at times.
10) One thing you hate about dance music culture…?
The ringing it leaves in my ears.
11) Last club you went to party at, rather than to play?!
I save most of my club nights for when I'm playing or when my good friends are playing. I did go and see Troy Pierce and Konrad Black play at Weekend in Berlin recently. I snuck on and played a few records though. I can't resist.
12) After hours, yes or no?
When the moon is full, anything can happen, and usually does.
13) If you were interviewing yourself, what question would you ask and what would the answer be?
ME: Hey Matthew, how are you?
ME: I'm good, really good.
ME: That's great, really, I'm happy you're good.
ME: Really? That's nice, thanks. So I'm guessing you're good too?
ME: Yeah. Really good. Really, really good.
14) What do you want to plug/promote?
I'm constantly working. Expect new releases and remixes as Audion early in 2009. Also, new songs/album as myself later in 2009.
Feed the beast.
