It was the big shock of 2008, Pete Tong's Friday night of classic Pacha chic, dollar chased the way to Eden and all of a sudden San An clubbing was cool. Hmmmm, well, there were difficulties for Tong's Wonderland last summer, none greater than the fact that Fridays in Pacha can't just be picked up and plonked into Fridays at Eden and be expected to work. But nobody gets the big names like old Tongy and the crackberry has been put to good use for what can only be described as a quality programme of electronic music for 2009. The usuals are there of course, the likes of Nic Fanciulli, Groove Armada, Timo Maas and Alex Neri, but the old boys' network keeps on growing and Luciano, M.A.N.D.Y., Gui Boratto and Dubfire provide some real diversity and underground cool to an event that has boldy gone where no self-respecting party has gone before (Eden or San An, take your pick!).

In the back room - which however well conceived for 2008, couldn't only be sustained by Groove Armada repeatedly playing Superstylin' - it's open house for label showcases and fresh talent. So really funky artists like Radio Slave and Nick Curly appear, alongside more well travelled folk like the Faith boys, Mr. C and Tim Sheridan. Moreover, Tongy wouldn't be Tongy if he hadn't thrown in a few curveballs, so Zane Lowe, Chase & Status, Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga provide the alternative offerings.
 
I'll be honest, I don't like Eden. The whole layout of the club isn't conducive to creating a clubbing atmosphere and 'dancefloors' are so 1970s Northern England. Sure, people dance all over the place, but if you're not on the dancefloor, you do kind of feel like you should be completing another lap of the club's figure of eight shape, which is more Ritzy than rave. That said though, the quality of the bookings this year means I'll find it pretty hard to resist going, there are just too many interesting and exciting artists playing. So basically, to summarise all this fence sitting hyperbole;

Essential Pete, as nobody likes to call him, has made sure Wonderland 2009 had a fatter cheque book, booked some pretty cool artists and it all begins on Friday 5th June. Just time to squeeze a conference in then!
