Movement 2009 It's easy to argue the toss over the particulars of 'where', 'when' and 'who' in regards to the birth of techno.

Some point to Kraftwerk's Kling Klang studios in Dusseldorf, Germany in the late 70s, but for most, it's Detroit where the sound really was honed into something resembling what we hear today.

So it's fitting then that the city of Detroit has embraced it's electronic past and future with am agreement between the city and Italian firm Paxhau, the organisers of Derrick May's Movement Detroit festival 2003, with Detroit mayor Kenneth V. Cockrel, Jr throwing his weight behind the venture, saying; "music is still one of Detroit's greatest assets."

This years' event runs from May 23-25 at Detroit's Hart Plaza with 4 stages and more than 70 artists and DJs. Amongst the tantalising prospects include a back to back set from Luciano and Loco Dice, and performances from Marco Carola, Tiga, Guy Gerber, Carl Cox, Innerversions and Derrick May himself. The Prodigy will kick the festival off on May 23. Detroit, due to its massive reliance on the automotive sector, has been one of the areas of the United State hardest hit by the downturn and has a well-documented history of social deprivation, ethnic tension and poverty. But it seems that Movement should be able to provide just a hint of relief to the city. Around 80,000 passed through the turnstiles for last years event, and similar numbers are expected this time round, with ticket sales reportedly double the level they were at this point last year.
