For ten years now, Glasgow duo Silicone Soul have been dropping beats deeper than Loch Ness. What's more, they are the only guys on the house scene that can speak the language of the soul fluently. Introduced to the world on Soma Records, founded by Scottish godfathers, Slam. They have three hugely successful albums under their sporran. This is their fourth studio album, self-titled and spirit bound for the dancefloor.
The album opens with a tribute to a recently deceased fan from the Bulgarian coastal city of Varna, entitled Koko's Song. It's hypnotic, emotive and has a deep sincerity driven by a compelling guitar loop that will inevitably draw you to a feeling of self-reflection.
Dust Ballad is one for the road. Imagine cruising down a dusty highway with a hazy heat ahead. This track is bound to add happiness to your day with bouncing beats and come-hither female vocals; a policeman would struggle to pull you over.
Language Of The Soul is a reworking of the AA side from the duo's first release on their Darkroom Dubs label. It's a universal gem with an ultra cool vibe. Perfect for some late afternoon grooves at a rooftop party. This is a flirtatious summer track and the funky muffled vocals seep with mystique.
Call of the Dub carries you along the soul train further; in fact it zips past with express urgency and the only place to catch it is in the darkness of a club. This is a no frills, no tricks track that plays with an archaic tapestry of sounds, including the ever so popular techno train horn.
The Pulse will no doubt find itself home to both the earlier and later portions of a set this summer. Like a rubix cube, it's a fun little builder that doesn't attempt to do more than briskly get things moving. Be warned the intro is infectious. Concluding the journey is Dogs Of Les Ilhes which dips deep between the eras and moods of a silent night. Listen out for the bells of the church clock tower as the album winds down to a finish.
Soul searching may often feel like a waste of time and energy, this album is anything but...
