German DJ and producer Manuel Tur has been one of 2009's brightest-shining house stars thus far, and is perhaps one of the most convincing purveyors of the new wave of 'deep'.
The 24 year old native of the industrial city of Essen's debut long player, the splendid '0201' dropped on Freerange last month to widespread industry acclaim, and this track - a collaboration with Shaboom records boss Blakkat - is one of it's highlights.
It's an interesting choice. One of the defining characteristics of '0201' was how well it worked as a cohesive album, not just a loosely cobbled together collection of 12"s. It's by no means a dancefloor collection - and this, even by the LPs reserved standards, is one of the least obvious candidates for a single. But it works.
The original mix is a laid back affair - almost to the point of being horizontal - with seldom a beat in earshot, punctuated by sparse claps and with Blakkat's velvety voice spread liberally over the track. It wears it's classic house influences on its sleeve with unashamed abandon and might even get the nostalgists excited.
As such, it only seems right that the influential Parisian house producer Pepe Bradock, a huge influence on Tur, has been roped in to provide two remixes. The most obviously dancefloor-centric one is the 'Minnie Mouth' remix, which puts a steady, unobtrusive house shuffle and added sparkle to the original, whilst keeping the vocal intact. Bradock also turns in an even deeper 'Reef Breaks Remix' as well as a handy acapella.
It's Tur's own live dub which is left to duke it out with the former for top honours, though. It's useful, in as much that vocals - particularly male ones - still have something of a 'Marmite' effect, in as much that you either love them or the very hint of one will have you running away hiding under a table. It's got melody and groove in spades, and is likely to be very big indeed over the coming months.
All in all, it's a highly worthwhile package, which in a sense, seems like a product of another time, yet incredibly current at the same time. Good stuff.
