German house producer Baaz a cat who likes to keep it stripped down, so he's found a great home in the form of British label Quintissentials. This release is as deep and raw as they come. True to form of the imprint, it's an uncomplicated, but highly effective piece of jazz-informed house music.
One thing you'll instantly notice is that it's all about the bass. 'Pass it On' is carried along on a wave of the stuff that's treacle-thick. On the right system, chances are it'll do a good job of rearranging your innards. The production is as tight as a indie kid's jeans - the kicks wallop, and the pads flit in and out, creating a fair whack of atmosphere too.
Meanwhile, 'Peeps' is a slo-motion swaggerer, with a similar hefty slice of bass to go with it. There's a slight hint of a female soul vocal drifting in and out of the mix. It's definitely one for the purists.
'So What' layers has more vocals again, with a familiar 'love' refrain and heaps of electric piano. It's a good atmosphere generator, and the only real criticism that you can lay at its' door is that it's ever so slightly formulaic.
'Don't Mention' rounds off the package well - it's possibly the most rock-steady of what's on offer and arguably the most floor-friendly of the selection. It's solid kick drum keeps thngs ticking along nicely and nothing sounds out of place or intrusive -it's slick, but in no way contrived. A very good thing, we're sure you'll agree.
This is by no means a package which will ignite a peak-time floor - and I very much doubt Baaz intended to be - but as a pre-club mood-setter or terrace bar grooving, you won't find much better for your hard-earned Euros.
