At this moment in time, as another Ibizan season creeps its way towards the finish line, it's with some trepidation that we'll try and forecast how the 2009 season will be remembered. Those who steered clear of the island this summer will undoubtedly point the finger of blame at the economic crisis as well as DC10's regrettable, yet inevitable closure. For those of us who did brave the white isle's undoubtedly expensive clubs though, it'll likely be recalled as the period when Ibiza's top techno jocks rose up and proved they've still more than a few tricks up their sleeve when faced with the adversity that a recession brings. With DC10 on its arse, Carl Cox is one of those Dj's, with his Tuesday night sessions at Space reestablishing themselves as one of the true bastions for underground sounding music on the island.
Having not kicked off his 'Join Our Revolution' parties till the relatively late date of the 7th July, Cox's parties it seems, have upped the ante even further in the popularity stakes this summer. Weather that can be attributed to the closure of DC10 or a lack of Tuesday night competition or even Space's welcome lowering of the entrance fee , packing Space in this era of uncertainty is still no mean feat.
The promoters of course, will do their utmost to convince you that Space has been rammed every Tuesday, though this isn't necessarily true. The opening party (Pendulum's set aside) was received well, but was by no means packed to the rafters with Space's famed terrace closed by 2am. A stuttering start then but in fairness to Coxy, Playa den Bossa is, in relative terms at least, still a ghost town at the start of July.
And what of the artists who've played and are yet to join Cox on the decks? Patchy at times (Kissy Sell Out or Sasha anyone?) and the big mans love of drum n bass needs to be questioned, but depending on when you partied in Ibiza this season, Cox's loyal army of followers have still been treated to techno sets from Philadelphia native Josh Wink to white noise purveyor Dubfire to old schoolers like Kevin Saunderson. Even the bald vegans set went down a storm, and in case you know a legion of bald vegans, I'm talking about the politically preoccupied and hilariously self indulgent Moby.
Cox's birthday was another fun filled affair, celebrated in typical rambunctious techno style. Last weeks performance, which saw Norman Cook and Yousef replace Cox was a decent, if unspectacular show however. If there's one man who can brew a techno storm, it's Cox, and his absence was undoubtedly felt on the night in question.
Still, the good news for techno and house fans alike, is that there's still appearances from Loco Dice, Satoshi Tomiie and Danny Tenaglia to look forward to. A more than stellar season for Carl Cox's 'Join Our Revolution' parties thus far then.
Let's hope 2010 continues in a similar vein and that the rumours of Cox upping sticks and moving to Amnesia are indeed, simply rumours. A revolution? Maybe not. Another great season in 2009? Undoubtedly.
