Released on Ben Watt's widely respected imprint, comes Buzzin Fly Glimpse and Martin Eyerer's recent collaboration, Southern Soul. Typical of the Buzzin Fly crew, it's another seemingly nonchalantly brilliant example of Watt and the gang's penchant for down tempo house and melodic, piano infused techno.
As a duo, Glimpse (aka London youngster Chris Spero) and Stuttgart's Eyerer have worked in unison on other projects on Buzzin Fly, and judging by this and previous releases such as 'Things Like This' these two must have some serious chemistry going on in the studio.
Southern Soul is the rarest of things in dance music - a unique production that's harmonious, soulful and melodic, yet still maintains enough "oomph" to rock any dance floor at well, precisely any moment it damn well wants to. It's certainly a refreshing change from the onslaught of pounding minimal which our ears have become accustomed to of late.
On the flip, Glimpse's fellow London upstart Jay Shepheard brings the track in a more peak-time-house-set direction by looping the piano, straightening the beats, adding multiple fx and adding a more emotive breakdown. A nice effort, despite regrettably sounding a bit Eric Prydz-ish in parts. Stephan Hinz's remix is another subtle one, adding a few snares and bringing things a bit deeper than the original, and just like the Shepheard remix, the original melody is virtually left untouched. Both nice efforts, but the remix package on the whole is a tad uninspiring in comparison to the original.
Either way, it's the aforementioned original which will do the proverbial damage on the dance floor. Piano laden deep techno jazz at it's finest, it's the the kind of tool that one imagines gives Laurent Garnier that deep fuzzy feeling. And that my friends, is never a bad thing.
