Simon Baker's been a busy man as of late. Having rose to prominence through a serious of impressive releases such as Kaskazi and Plastik, he's also an impressive remix discography, most notably his rework of Simian Mobile Disco's Sleep Deprivation and recently, his tech-house fueled take on Bruno Gauthier's It's Love. While he's released on renowned German imprints such as Cocoon, Get Physical and Playhouse, he's latest project, the sees him return to his British roots, with the track given a lease of life via the esteemed British label murmur, who themselves have hosted an impressive cast of producers, including Nima Gorji, SIS and Dyed Soundorom.
On with the music at hand, the Moonblock / Mamaia Highway EP is typical Baker fair. While it could be said that his tracks revolve around a similiar, percussion heavy template, it's still a job he does with distinction. Opening track Moonblock is another tech house bomb, it's sonic space aged synths featuring elements of the like you'll have heard on Baker's fellow Kaskazi collaborators Jamie Jones recent long player, Don't you remember the future.' Perhaps the space ages theme is in the name eh? As far away from boring minimal as can thankfully be, Moonblock is a tech house ass mover made, seemingly, like all of Baker's productions tailored to the dance floor.
Dragship is more down tempo, with heavy African sounding percussion and subtle vocals, which seem to be de rigour in dance music in 2009. Typical of the producer at hand, the track changes direction many times and though it's a grand track in it's own right and will garner many plays, it's not as instantly exciting as some of his past work.
Final track (vinyl lovers beware - it's digital only) Mamaia Highway is another gem, with even more signature cosmic influences, drums and tumbling basslines popping up for good measure. This one is a real groover! Clearly a man with a penchant for weird hypnotic sounds and captivating fx, Baker has his finger firmly of the pulse of electronic music in 2009. I'm yet to hear this guy make a bad track and long may it continue.
