To say that club culture in the Far East has come of age in recent years would be something of an understatement... And if you require any measure of how things have moved on, take a look at the upcoming Zoukout festival, held on Singapore's Siloso Beach this December 12.

An offshoot of the long-running Zouk Club, often credited with bringing dance and club culture to Singapore since its inception in 1991, the Zoukout festival made its first appearance in 2000 and has welcomed international big hitters like Sven Vath, 2ManyDJs, Richie Hawtin and Masters at Work to its stages over the past nine years. Last year's event welcomed 26,000 partygoers through its gates, and with the addition of more stages this year, it's set to get even bigger.

The ever-popular trancemeister Armin Van Buuren gets top billing, while Richie Hawtin, the M_nus chief and possibly the most influential man in the world of techno, returns to the festival. On a lighter tip, Simon Dunmore, Defected gaffer, is set to bring the good-time house flavours.

And speaking of house music, youthful Pacha residents The Martinez Brothers are set for their ZoukOut debut, while an altogether edgier brand of noise can be expected from electroclash pioneers Miss Kittin & The Hacker, who'll be bringing their live show to Siloso Beach. Tiga , the ever-superb Canadian noise dandy, will also make an appearance, along with Balearic-tinged Belgian duo Aeroplane, who produced one of the remixes of the year with their re-rub of Grace Jones's ‘William's Blood'.

It seems that artists love playing it too. "When you mention Asia, ZoukOut is the one event everyone talks about. It's reputation is legendary" reckons Erol Alkan, while Armin Van Buuren confidently claims it to be "the best festival in Asia."

ZoukOut marketing manager Mari Muramoto says: "We have learnt a lot over the past 8 ZoukOuts and every year, we learn and improve on our mistakes. The clubbers' tastes are always evolving and we need to not only evolve with them but to keep one step ahead of them to educate them of future music trends and always have some surprises to keep them thrilled and satisfied."

She continues: "Everyone who has attended ZoukOut knows it's not only about the best in dance music: it's about the entire festival experience, immersing you from the moment you enter into a unique entertainment wonderland."

So, with sun, an incredibly diverse selection of artists and a crowd drawn from every corner of the globe, Zoukout 2009 might just be a late contender for the best event of the year...
