Anyone who's witnessed an Alex Niggemann set can testify to the fact that he's a more than capable Dj. So it's with some enthusiasm that I received his latest production, the ‘Berlin down the House' EP, which he's co-produced with fellow Berliner Marc Poppcke. Released on Bloop Recordings imprint, the title track is as far away in sound from the mundane minimal techno sound, which has somewhat unfortunately blemished the cities impressive musical landscape over the past few years.

Berlin down the House' is precisely the opposite - a superb blend of percussive, filtered, proper house music with a funky edge that will gain favour with Dj's from all corners of the dance music spectrum. Laced with energy and funk, this summery sounding production provides a much-needed antidote to the cold winter months.

The first of the two remixes arrives courtesy of Diynamic mainstay Uner, who's enjoyed a simply phenomenal year on the back of the success of his productions with Coyu, most notably their ‘Baby Allfunk' EP. His penchant for funky, groove- laden melodic house is once again emphatically displayed with his remix. Uner considerably ups the originals ante, paving the way for a quite brilliant breakdown.

The packages final offering sees Nuremberg producer Michael Melchner bringing the original to deeper territories. He's stripped the vocals and left the bass line virtually intact. While it's a capable effort in it's own right, it lacks the intensity, which made the first two so enjoyable.

It's an overused work to describe house music in 2009, but for those of you who enjoy the contemporary ‘funky' sound popularised by artists such as Niggemann and Uner, consider Bloop15 an essential purchase.
