Josh Wink's Ovum label unveils its first digital release of 2010 with the debut of newcomer M A N I K on this house tinged three track EP. The new EP features one solid track with a mediocre A-side and a disposable B-side completing the package.
The above average cut in this trio is the A-side complementary "Rau Down Low", this is an attention grabbing piece of deep techno with crisp hi-hats and mesmerizing synth stabs.
Add some wacky 8-bit sounds as melody and the whole affair comes alive with a gentle undulating pulse that encourages tired late night crowds to keep swaying to the beat without pounding them over the heads to make the point.
On the other hand, the title track "Park The Slope" with muted jazzy chords suggests some welcome hints of the current deep house trend. But this one fails to conjure any more distinction than that relying on clichés of soft keys and fluffy guitar licks making it too unsubstantial to be the attention grabbing leadoff track for this release.
Rounding out the new single is a B-side - "N Train To Astoria" - offering some fun acid sequences but little else. It's typical flipside fodder, disposable but still a candidate for a quirky dance floor excursion for daring DJs.
This one also sounds more like Josh Wink's mid Nineties work than anything Ovum has released recently for fans of the label's original sound.
