Since their first release in 2007, Mihalis Safras and Mark Brooms Material Series imprint have been consistently delivering tracks of varying style and structure, always with a firm emphasis placed on the quality of their putout. While other labels were quick to jump on the fashionable sound of the day, be it dark, heavy or minimal techno or organic, dubby, house tracks, Material always embraced the full variety of techno - a fact very much evident in this latest package. The White EP, to quote Material, features a 'super group of modern techno artists.' While the producers on show here don't exactly amount to the electronic music equivalent of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the White EP is nonetheless a more than credible four track EP, with interesting moments aplenty.

The concept of the EP is however, somewhat confusing, and if I've one gripe with this package it's that the tracks titles are for some reason emitted - the only information we're left with is that they're remixes of previous Material tracks. Each individual was given the task of remixing a track from the labels' back catalogue, the choice of which can only be identified by the original catalogue number. While we're unsure of the logic behind such a move, the EP does afford the listener the opportunity to judge each track individually, rather than on the merits of the track its remixed.

The first track arrives courtesy of German producer Gregor Tresher. Fresh from his well received LP on his own Break New Soil imprint, hopes were high for Tresher's contribution. Suffice to say, he doesn't let the side down - delivering a typically synth based

Label head Mihalis Safras  is up nextwhereby a tidy, funky baseline is interrupted by a vocal sprouting something about 'insufficient funds'. One can only presume that the vocal is a hangover from the original track, as its presence here is unwarranted and actually acts as a disruption to an otherwise buoyant tech house effort.  track with an epic breakdown that will be sure to go down a treat.

Argentina's Jonas Kopp, who's had records released on the likes of Spectral and Traut, comes up trumps with his remix. With claps and drums pepred over a seriously catchy, rolling bass line, Kopp's contribution is the most outstanding of the tracks on offer.  Kopp's fellow South American, Brazilian Renato Cohen ups the ante with the EP's final track. Not quite as memorable as his most renowned work, 2008's 'Pontape', Cohen's remix features a multitude of sci-fi sounds, drums and typically, bass aplenty from a man with a knack for producing intriguing, contemporary techno. The White EP is an undoubtedly strong collection of remixes from a shrewdly assembled group of artists. With all 4 remixes impressive in their own right, it's perhaps time to discover the originals...
