Soundwave Festival 23rd – 25th July Petrcane, CroatiaSituated in the south eastern corner of Europe, Croatia is fast becoming an alternative hotspot for the frivolous and carefree who want to opt out of spending their summer festival in a muddy field. In recent years the country, formerly part of the now defunct Yugoslavia has been making inroads into the festival market with The Garden Party held in early July, SunCe Beat and Electric Elephant in August and the Stop Making Sense Festival to be held in early September. These events will feature big names DJs such as Carl Craig, Francois K, Juan Maclean, Theo Parrish, Dennis Ferrer, Dixon, Glimpse and The Revenge. On the more eclectic side of electronica The Hartera Festival which runs in June featured noteworthy artists Fuck Buttons, Nathan Fake, Moderat and Nosaj Thing.

Now in its 2nd year, Soundwave was the only festival in Croatia and the Baltic region that made it onto The Guardian's top 10 list of festivals for 2010 and accolades of comparison were made between Soundwave and Rob Da Bank's, uber cool, boutique event "Bestival". Set near the fishing village of Petrcane on a curving peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea on the Dalmatian coast the main stage is situated inside a grove of 100 year old pine trees.

Intimate by nature, it caters for only 3000 which can only be good news for those overwhelmed by the thousands of revellers that accompany festivals across Europe during the Summer (Lost mates and hours of wandering aimlessly anyone??) months.

The day time stage back-dropped by Petrcane Bay and the Velebit Mountains will feature artists such as Warp Records and Flying Lotus collaborator Andreya Triana, BBC 1 extra's Benji B, Hip Hop star DJ Vadim, Radio 1's new music hero Toddla T and former Scratch Pervert Mr Thing.

Grammy nominated Zero 7 will deliver a DJ set and Ninja Tunes signee's "The Cinematic Orchestra will close the festival with a sunset gig. Boat parties during the day and early evening will also take place but are an additional cost of £15 to the £75 weekend tickets. For those wanting to party into the night a 600 capacity studio 54 styled nightclub is also on the site. Festival promoter Noah Ball recently said the following "We're not about selling rave to people. This is not another Ibiza based on Brits abroad getting drugged up - It's a taste of what Ibiza was 25 years ago" and that "You can spend as much in a week in Croatia as you would in UK in a weekend." On the downside there is no camping site at Soundwave but accommodation in local Petrcane hotels, campsites, apartments, villas and even boats is readily available within a short distance of the main festival stage. Closest airport is Zadar, Split is 90mins and Zagreb 3hr, serviced by Ryanair and Easy Jet.
