The Big Chill Festival from 5th till 8th August 2010In my many years festivalling I have been to quite a few different parties around the globe, but for some reason The Big Chill is one event that I keep coming back to, year after year. Maybe it's the lush, rolling, Tellytubbyland-like location in the Malvern Hills (a deer park when not in use by the festival); maybe it's the fact that it seems to be blessed, pretty much without fail, by brilliant weather; maybe it's the laid-back crowd and easygoing atmosphere among everyone you meet; or maybe it's the unparalleled combination of world-class dance and alternative music acts, comedians, art installations and spoken word performances appearing over the weekend...

Whatever it is, it keeps me coming back every year. And every year, no matter how hard I push things or how little sleep I get, I always come back at the end of it feeling like I've had a relaxing weekend. And that, dear readers, is nothing short of a genuine, Christ-given miracle.

But don't take my word for it. One look at this year's line-up and you should be dribbling over your keyboard like a fat kid browsing cake-porn. 2010's headliners are Massive Attack, M.I.A. and Lily Allen, and while admittedly the latter of those might not inspire much interest among you, how about the news that Friday will feature an unfathomably rare performance by none other than Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke? Not enough? Ok, well how about the debut UK festival performance of the brand new live show from the legendary Kruder & Dorfmeister and a live show from Layo & Bushwacka? Or appearances from wall-of-noise instrumental powerhouses Explosions In The Sky, lo-fi loungemaster Bonobo, alt-electronica wunderkind Caribou, future garage posterboys Mount Kimbie, or Thamesbeat indie kids The Mystery Jets? Still want more? Well then, perhaps DJ sets from High Contrast, Magnetic Man, Riva Starr, Andy Weatherall, Joker, 2020 Soundsystem, Bullion, London Elektricity, Seth Troxler b2b Jamie Jones, Theo Parrish, Toddla T, Martyn, Tomb Crew and Henrik Schwarz, among many, many, others, might convince you?

And if all that's not enough to at least tickle the tastebuds of temptation, then maybe you need to have a long hard look in the mirror and think about whether you are really interested in music at all, because a large part of that line-up has ‘wet dream' written all over it. Sure, it may not have the hardcore hippy history of a festival like Glastonbury, or the 24-hour party predilection of something like Creamfields or Global Gathering, but one visit to The Big Chill and I guarantee you'll be hooked. I haven't been to a bad one yet, and that's not something I can say about a lot of events these days...
