Be Chosen has been growing in stature with every release since its inception. However, with their latest release, the "Freaksummer EP" from Santé & Sascha Sibler, the patient imprint have failed to build on the success of their previous offering for the first time. Although still an interesting EP, and one with plenty to take note of, the "Freaksummer" EP lacks the strength of their previous outing, Daniel Stefanik's "Power of the Deep." Santé was looking to consolidate his position as a producer with this release. Having showed great promise on previous releases for the likes of Souvenir and Rekids it is a great shame to see him fall short on this one. That said, as mentioned before, there is still plenty here to suggest that he really is the producer that we all want him to be. His partner in crime for this release is Sascha Sibler, teaming up for some loopy, minimal house over a three track EP.

"Ce Loca" bubbles away from the beginning, constantly evolving from cerebral drum patterns and high end percussion. Ominous tones begin to break out into the foreground, emerging as strange, stretchy and distorted synth bursts. The beat falls away leaving the track at its most obscure before the myriad of drums kick back in and lead us once more into the heart of the busied track.

"Roma" starts off with a more traditional minimal aesthetic but then builds into an ever more obscured sound palette. Hypnotic and minimal, the track sees mechanical elements winding around an almost industrial bass structure to gradually build itself into an unusual and futuristic groove. Strangely addictive, the groove of the tune is compelling but sadly there just isn't enough substance to the track to make it a standout one.

The package finishes with the best and most natural of the three. "Loug" has an easy and organic flow whilst still possessing a powerful and dance inducing rhythm. The percs and clattering, jingling percussion give the track a highly exotic feel which is only compounded by the tribal-like vocals that flicker across the top. This is dancefloor minimal in its most ass shaking form here.

Not up to their previous standards, the "Freaksummer" EP is a slightly weakened chink in the Be Chosen chain. But the potential for the imprint is still clear to see. Although this release suggests that they're not quite there yet, the inclusion of tracks like "Loug" suggest that they are most certainly on their way!
