For Mija's ninth release, label boss Louis Osbourne makes the wise decision to return to Jamie Anderson's huge vocal mover "Cyclone" for a set of shotgun-to-the-chest remixes that range from Detroit legend Stacey Pullen to deep house heads Fish Go Deep. The package is a rare peak hour banger with some class that doesn't need a sledgehammer or annoying old school rave bits to give it that extra edge. There are some obvious nods to Derrick Carter here but with enough twists and turns to call it original.
Pullen's remix leads-off the six track offering with a perfect compliment to K-Alexi's vocals that sounds exactly like vintage Pullen - funky. The remix is solid Detroit house music, no frills but never lacking in groove and always keeping the original feeling of Anderson's track in sight.
Coyu brings a Wild Pitch meets Rekids feel to his remix, the energy is relentless, forging a powerful, hypnotic groove. The addition of a screaming diva loop alongside a rather simple piano loop and muting the original vocal to the back of the mix is questionable considering the strength of the original material. That choice makes this remix the weakest in the bunch.
Fish Go Deep do what they do best, more power to the Irish duo for sticking to their formula for all of these years. The pair's remix is late night deep with subtle hints of both house and techno and an inventive use of Alexi's vocal. The welcome addition of a dub allows for ample mixing time of the vocal and the beats to keep the wee hours crowd suspended in a perpetual druggy pall - and who doesn't like that?
Anderson himself gets in the remix action taking the white lightning powered beats of his "Predator" track released earlier this year on his own Artform label. The resultant mash-up is touch-as-nail but deep enough to satisfy even the pickiest of underground clubbers. The rolling beats and laser beam rushes of "Predator" were welcome last winter and even more desirable now with addition of Alexi's vocals. Anderson also provides a "Re-vox" mix, which is essentially a second pass at the original with (sonically) cleaner vocals. It's probably an unnecessary move but in such an uncertain sales climate, excess always seems to pay off.
