Unless someone takes the time to professionally DJ, finding the time to wade through the endless amounts of tracks released on a daily basis is impossible, let alone trying to find a decent one worthy of the title hit.
Luckily, premier distributor Whatpeopleplay has teamed up with I Voice to provide a little guidebook for overwhelmed fans of quality underground dance tracks.
Time to relax and take a break, every thing offered this month in the player has a nice laidback groove - some experimental, others Balearic. This is a great showcase of quality electronic music producers and remixers working outside the tyranny of the beat and a refreshing change of pace.
***
01. Zev "Don't Break It" Wolf & Lamb Records A decent stab at an old school acid house track complete with midtempo abstract leanings. This one is best suited for the headphones but a worthy addition to the Wolf & Lamb catalog.
Rating: 6/10
02. Mark E "Nobody Else" Running Back Waves of different percussion - from bells to congas collide in this headphone friendly deep tech house cut. The rippling grooves and ocean of melodies make this one an instant classic.
Rating: 8/10
03. Todd Omotani & Jaidene Veda "I Left My…" (Charles Webster Dub Remix) Amenti Music A return to the classic West Coast house sound on this release from San Francisco's Amenti Music. Charles Webster really provides the fireworks on this remix, a true dub with melodies King Tubby would proud of and an inescapable tech house groove. A must have this summer.
Rating: 9/10
04. Jon Hopkins "Jon Hopkins Remixes 12" (Vessel - Four Tet Remix) Double Six Records Four Tet returns the favor after Jon Hopkins recent remix of his "Angel Echoes" with this hard garage reworking of "Vessel". It is nice to hear Four Tet getting his groove on his major way including a gorgeous ambient breakdown more in line with his body of work than the rest of the remix.
Rating: 6/10
05. Ame "Rrose Sélavy" Innervisions Original pairing of found sound minimal techno and deep house groove with some sneaky sting pads. This track gets a little to focused on the hypnotic, loopy portion of the track but the abstract melodies make it sound much more futuristic than any other tracks in the genre.
Rating: 7/10
06. Oliver Deutschmann "Himmel und Erde EP" (Wingz) Vinyl Did it Who can argue with any track sampling Isaac Hayes, especially a decent filter house one? The groove here is good but is filter house necessary in 2010, obviously some folks can't get enough in.
Rating: 5/10
07. Al Tourettes "Appleblim" (Linkwood's Codeine Remix) Lipsmacker Ep Aus Music Linkwood delivers a true b-side here, a low-key collection of techno, old school boogie, and half-decent house. The groove and funky melodies make this a fun afterhours cut for happy crowds everywhere. Production on the is top-shelf with crisp 808 drums upfront.
Rating: 6,5/10
08. Rocha "Feel The Love" (Welcome Strangers Creation Dub) International Feel Thomas Bullock goes way out on the version with sublime piece of chill out cum Balearic loaded with strong piano melodies and a solid groove for dancing. There are strong hints of watching the sunset at Cafe del Mar, which is probably the inspiration for this essential downtempo cut.
Rating: 7/10
09. Livio & Roby "Tribute" (Stapanu Intergalactic) Desolat Livio & Roby, the well-known Romanian techno duo, deliver this rootsy piece of tech house for the consistent Desolat imprint. They don't disappoint with an excellent high hat, warm analog bass, and unmistakable 808 snares. A spoken word vocal draws comparison to Green Velvet but done with that twisted Romanian approach that makes this track a noteworthy peak hour affair.
Rating: 7/10
10. Good Guy Mikesh "Spare" (Christian Löffler Remix) Ki Here's a decent slab of experimental techno with some popping melodies. Introspective like the material from Border Community but with more of the bounce found on the Kompakt release. The vocals are average but the clipped beats bear more than a passing resemblence to Boards of Canada making it seem warmer and more familiar.
