Paul Bowen's Luna Records reaches it' sixth release with their finest output to date. Santorini's "Supersoul" EP is the culmination of their steady progress and the product of their eye for detail. Having been impressed with his remix of Bowen's "Black Matter" on the last release for the imprint, Luna were quick to offer the Italian the chance to contribute a single of his own. The result is a collection of quality house grooves that are built around Santorini's typically rhythmic structures, making the EP an addictive yet refined release. Topped off by a "Lazy Dub" edit from Bearweasel, this truly is Lunar at their most compelling best.
True to Lunar's already established sound, the release slides into a subtle, bass-led groove right from the start courtesy of lead track "Supersoul." With its lusciously deep sound, the track eases along with a sophisticated soul as oceanic synth stabs create this plush soundscape. The combination of fluid bass and tight drums pack the tune with swing and power and give this altogether laid back track its Purpose and momentum. Again alluding to the 26 year old's deft production techniques, simple yet elegant chords are sewn into the track throughout its entirety, adding yet more grace and suaveness to the fold.
"Touch Me" is next up and comes brimming with intensity. It still has the same soul and mellowed out vibe as its predecessor but manifests itself with more intensity than the laidback sentiment of "Supersoul." Its heavily shuffled rhythm interplays delightfully with effected melodies and reverb'd female vocals to give the track its distinctive character. It is modern house music that doesn't rely solely on energy to define itself.
Keeping the lid firmly on things, UK duo and previous remixers for Luna, Bearweasel turn in one of their ‘Lazy Dub' edits of "Supersoul." As expected, it is a slow burning dubby cut filled with filtered sounds and skittering top end percussion. Perfect for after hours listening it is a floatingly hypnotic track, as deep as it is blissful.
Not content to leave it there, Luna and Santorini push on with two more offerings. First the Italian drops a dub version of "Touch Me," delving even deeper in the sub-terrainial tones of the original before finishing off the package with another new production. "Mr Molotov" is the most dancefloor orientated of the bunch, sticking to the rhythmical nature of the previous offerings but stepping up the tempo that little bit to give it enough kick to fuel it in the clubs. As they continue to get stronger and stronger, Luna Records will be looking to go even one step further with their next release and begin to build up a steady stream of standout releases from here on in.
