I still get goosebumps thinking about some of the memories that the Coco Loco at Privilege has given me. The name comes from the Puerto Rican cocktail 'Coco Loco', or to be more exact the rather spicier version created by Brasilio (La Troya Godfather) to accompany the hedonistic and exuberant nature of the parties he threw here in the 80s and 90s. As an aside, when the La Troya Asesina parties were being held in Amnesia during the early 00s, Coco Loco was actually served daily at the club by resident tranny Tirry.
Located on the side of the huge Privilege club, the Coco Loco space is still somewhat of a hidden gem, incongruous with the enormity of the dimensions of the Main Room. Instead, this cosy space with an outdoor garden feel - the trees, foliage and terracotta see to that - has become renowned for having that particular je ne sais quoi and 'wow!' factor that all the great arenas in Ibiza clubs have. The old Space terrace and DC10's terrace are the two best example of it and it was similar here. With huge, floor to ceiling windows the full length of one side of the room, in yesteryear, the sun would stream through for the parties that went on past 7, making sunglasses and fans more than essential. The view to Ibiza Town really doesn't ever stop pulling at the heart strings.
The afterhour vibe in here was electric, particularly at Manumission events that went on until 9 or 10 am, where most memorably for me Colin Peters developed a blend of ultra-smiley house that left your cheek muscles sore. Whether it be Balearic classics like Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones, oddballs like Girls and Boys by Blur or just quintessential stuff like Rock the Casbah by The Clash, 'those were the days my friend'.
Since then, the reputation of the Coco Loco has remained, typically at the expense of the frequently criticised main room. In fact, such is the extent of the issue that punters would come just to see the Coco Loco strut her stuff, oblivious and ambivalent to the Main Room proceedings. In recent years, Meganite and Monza have both suffered this fate, as a fresh round of memories was etched into the collective brains of the minimal generation favouring the Coco Loco. We've even had a couple of Circo Loco events here down the years, particularly at the end of 2008 when Jamie Jones and Clive Henry preached Orbitalife by Johnny D in their sermon from way on high in the pulpit like DJ box, proving there's still plenty of flavour still representing here.
