Go BackRobot Child - Dusty Hi/Link on Sideways Recordings

Tim Green is a production force to be reckoned with these days having released material on Dirtybird, Get Physical, and Cocoon among others. On his latest for UK indie Sideways he dons his Robot Child moniker and gets super deep with exquisite melodies and some crystal clear bass tones courtesy of his recently acquired Juno.

It's a different, more progressive side of Green and one he should explore more often as this two-tracker will certainly attest.

"Dusty Hi" has a slight progressive edge that recalls old Bedrock releases with pretty melodies that border on trance but without any of that genre's excess baggage. The slowly rolling arpeggios create a decent amount of tension while the sharp, cutting analog bass gives it the necessary groove to make it swing. The result is one part Berlin and the other all Chicago.

"Dusty Hi" isn't a particularly brainy track but does manage to sound good and do the right things in all the right places, a simple enough task, but one that seems lost on many of today's producers.

"Link" is drawn from Green's earlier, more experimental work. The tricky time signatures and blippy melodies recall a more primitive, old school techno vibe.

The bass is less punchy than some of Green's newer work and it does take some of the momentum out of this track but not enough to keep it from being an interesting jam that is again heavily influenced by the old school progressive sound that Darren Emerson mined for his classic "Te Quiero".
