"For those in the know, Hypercolour is a purveyor of the finest house and techno... fact!" claim the quartet of guys behind the London label; Jamie Russell, Alex Jones, Ste Roberts and Ryan Hope. Bold assertions, for sure, but assertions with which it is becoming increasingly difficult to find fault given the quality of previous releases like the chunky beats of Mark Henning ('The Right Time') the churchy deep house of Kris Wadsworth ('Mainline') and the drunken funk of Shenoda ('Speakeasy' EP).
It's certainly true, though, that you're only as strong as your last release, so how will f-f-fresh Spanish talent El_Txef_A fit in with Hypercolour's prerogative?
Very well is the answer: 'She Kissed Me' is a rich, chord laden exercise in classy and emotive house. A well balanced bed of 4/4 is laid down beneath softly-softly keys before a penetrating male vocal call finally cuts in and offers the release you've been looking for; the excuse to bust an extra intoxicated move or to woop in an act of emotional discharge - it's compelling stuff.
Interpreting things in more granular detail (as you'd expect from someone often termed a micro house producer courtesy of his links to Playhouse) is Holgar Zilske. Adding precise clicks, snippets of sandpaper texture and a more undulating, bobbling bassline, the German also clips the chords before setting off on a deep, delicious excursion into late-night, back room house.
Nudging at the outer limit of what it's possible to fit on one side of a vinyl is Minilogue. His weightless, 15 minute dub house re-rub has exactly the sort of ebbing fluidity, bottomless drums and leaky synths that - on headphones in particular - can keep you suspended in their escapist and buoyant midst from start to finish and, frankly, few places sound better right now. If you weren't "in the know" about Hypercolour before, you likely will be once you hear all this.
